Fune' & Hurley Sit 1-2 After Day One Of The Big West Heptathlon

2 Long Beach State entries are in the top-five of the Decathlon
SAN LUIS OBISPO, Calif.—Long Beach State's Hailey Fune' and Jenelle Hurley are 1-2 in the heptathlon, while two Beach men's competitors are in the top five of the decathlon as the Big West multis got underway at Cal Poly's Miller & Capriotti Athletics Complex.
HEPTATHLON
Fune' opened the day by running the second-fastest 100m hurdles time in school history, 13:35, to win the event and score 1,072 points.Hurley ran a season-best 14.58 to finish fifth in the 100m hurdles, scoring 898 points. Sofia Bailey ran a career-best 14.71 in the 100m hurdles to place seventh for 880 points. Alli Bryan's 16.10 earned her 702 points (15th).
Fune', Hurley, and Hawai'i's Samantha Gordon all cleared 5-5 3/4 in the high jump. The trio were each awarded 818 points, with Hurley recording a season-best in the event. Bryan tied for sixth in the high jump (644 points) with three other competitors. Bailey cleared 4-10 1/2 in the high jump to record 610 points. She finished in a tie for 10th with three others.
Hurley threw a career-best 35-7 1/4 in the shot put to finish fourth (585 points). Bailey's 35-5 1/4 resulted in fifth and 582 points. Bryan was 11th (32-2 3/4, 518 points), while Fune' placed 14th (30-5 1/2, 482 points).
Fune' ran a career-best 25.07 in the 200m to finish third, scoring 880 points. Bailey's career-best 25.10 resulted in a fourth-place finish and 878 points. Hurley also posted a career-best in the 200m, running 25.51 in sixth (841 points). Bryan's 26.29 earned her 772 points (11th).
Fune' has scored 3,252 points, leading Hurley by 110. Bailey is seventh with 2,984, while Bryan is 12th (2,636).
DECATHLON
In the opening 100m, Aidan Turner ran a season-best 10.83 to finish second, scoring 899 points. Justice Fair's 11.25 was a new career-best, earning him sixth and 806 points. Milo Orona's 11.28 put him in seventh and gave him 799 points.
Turner earned second place in the long jump with a leap of 22-9 3/4 (802 points). Fair finished fourth with a jump of 22-5 3/4 (778 points). Orona was sixth with a leap of 21-9 1/2 (729 points)
Orona led the way for the Beach in the shot put, finishing sixth with a toss of 41-3 3/4 (642 points). Turner threw the shot 41-3 1/4 to place seventh (642 points). Fair was eighth with a season-best toss of 37-4 (569 points).
Orona tied for second in the high jump with Isaac Knapp of Cal Poly, clearing 6-2 3/4, earning the pair 714 points. Fair went 6-0 1/2 to record 661 points during his fifth-place showing. Turner went 5-1 3/4 for 441 points (10th)
Orona recorded a new career-best in the 400m as he went 49.52, scoring 837 points during his third-place run. Fair's 52.14 resulted in a sixth-place showing (719 points). Turner did not start the 400m.
Orona is fourth with 3,721 points. UC Irvine's Josh Farmer leads the competition with 4,017 points. Fair is fifth with 3,533 points.
Due to the expected afternoon rain in the San Luis Obispo area, the Big West games committee has decided to move up the start times for Saturday. The Decathlon start will move up an hour and will now begin at 9:30 a.m. The Heptathlon start will move up 30 minutes and will now begin at 11 a.m.
