Strong Singles Showings Lift Beach Tennis To A 5-2 Win Over UC Davis

Long Beach State dominates singles as Hana Becirovic Novak clinches the match for the Beach at flight six
LONG BEACH, Calif. – Long Beach State dropped the doubles point to UC Davis, but bounced back with a excellent showing in singles action as they won five games to defeat the Aggies, 5-2, on Saturday afternoon at Rhodes Tennis Center.
With the win, the Beach improve to 6-4 on the year and 3-1 in Big West action. Meanwhile, the Aggies drop to 5-10 overall and 2-3 in league play.
"I'm really proud of the team," Long Beach State Head Coach Jenny Hilt-Costello said. "After we dropped the doubles point, we came back with a lot of determination in singles. We had strong singles performances in all six spots."
Doubles competition saw Davis's pair of Daisy and Olive Maunupau take flight two in straight sets, 6-0, over Doga Akyurek and Hana Becirovic Novak. The Aggies managed to win the doubles point with a 6-3 win at flight one as Arianna Stavropoulous and Mika Ikemori downed Rhona Cook and Peppi Ramstedt.
After falling in doubles, Akyurek did a good job bouncing back and getting the momentum going for LBSU in singles as she made quick work of Olive Maunupau, 6-0, 6-1 to even the match at 1-1.
Following suit, Sarah Medik took down Carly Schwartzberg, 6-0, 6-2 at flight five to give the Beach a 2-1 lead over the Aggies.
Ramstedt, who was playing at flight three, faced off against Michelle Zell and earned a gritty 6-3, 6-4 win as Long Beach State went up 3-1.
At flight six, Becirovic Novak battled Daisy Maunupau in a three-set thriller. Becirovic Novak took the first set, 6-1, but Maunupau came back and edged the Maribor, Slovenia native, 7-5, in the second set. Becirovic Novak battled back and avenged her doubles loss with a 6-4 win to clinch the match for the Beach, 4-1.
The battle between the conference foes continued as Cook and Stavopoulos fought through three sets at the top flight. After dropping the first set, Cook rallied to defeat Stavopoulos, 6-2, 6-3 to give LBSU a 5-1 lead.
Rounding out the day in singles action, Justine Dondonay won the first set at flight two, 6-1. However, the Aggies' Ikemori managed to come back and win the next two sets, 6-2, 7-6 (7) to give UC Davis its lone singles point as the Beach completed the victory, 5-2.
Next up for the Beach is a Thursday, March 14 home contest against Harvard at Rhodes Tennis Center. First serve is scheduled for 2 p.m. Live scoring will be available via BeachLiveStats.com.
