Long Beach State Drops Tough One To Harvard, 4-1

The Beach win the doubles point, but fall in singles in a clinch/clinch match
LONG BEACH, Calif. – The Long Beach State Women's Tennis team started off strong, but ultimately dropped a 4-1 contest to visiting Harvard at Rhodes Tennis Center on Thursday.
The Beach (6-5) and the Crimson (12-2) squared off on Thursday afternoon in a clinch/clinch match that saw Long Beach State start off strong.
At flight two, Doga Akyurek and Hana Becirovic Novak got things going with a 6-2 win over Iveta Daujiotaite and Angel You. The tandem of Rhona Cook and Peppi Ramstedt clinched the doubles point as they knocked off Stephanie Yakoff and Holly Fischer, 6-3, at the top flight.
In singles action, Akyurek suffered a 6-4, 6-0 setback at flight four to Harvard's Charlotte Ownsby as the Crimson evened the score at 1-1.
Harvard's Sany Gawande defeated Becirovic Novak at court six, 6-4, 6-1, as the Crimson tool a 2-1 lead over the Beach.
Meanwhile, at court one, Cook was in a battle with Fischer. Cook claimed the first set 6-4, and Fischer was leading 2-1 in a tight competition when the game was won by default, putting Harvard on top of Long Beach State, 3-1.
The loss by default seemed to shift the momentum as Ramstedt was locked in a competitive contest with Maxi Duncan at flight three. Duncan won the first set, 6-0, but Ramstedt battled back to take the second set 7-6 (5). The duo were in the midst of set three when the loss by fault was called on court one. Following the decision, Ramstedt came up short, dropping a hard-fought 6-3 decision to Duncan as Harvard went on to win the match.
Long Beach State looks to bounce back on Friday, March 15 at 1 p.m., when the Beach face Saint Mary's at Rhodes Tennis Center. Live scoring will be available via BeachLiveStats.com
