Beach Continues Big West Climb With 5-2 Win Over UC Davis

Doubles sweep sets the tone as LBSU improves to 3-1 in league action
LONG BEACH, Calif. -- Long Beach State continued its strong play at home Sunday afternoon, defeating UC Davis 5-2 at Rhodes Tennis Center to improve to 8-6 overall and 3-1 in Big West play. The Beach secured its third conference win while remaining undefeated in doubles at home this season.
The tone was set early in doubles, where LBSU swept all three courts to claim the opening point. On court one, Cecilia Costa and Paulina Franco delivered a 6-3 win over Mika Ikemori and Polina Marakhtanova. Pamela Badillo and Thea Jagare followed with a 6-4 victory at No. 2 against Isabella Bringas and Maya Youssef. The clean sweep was completed on court three, as Daisy Carpenter and Diana De Simone edged Aileena Hu and Kaia Wolfe 7-6, taking the tiebreaker 8-6 to secure the point.
With the 1-0 lead in hand, the Beach captured four of six singles matches to close out the 5-2 decision.
Pamela Badillo was first off the court in singles, earning a decisive 6-3, 6-1 win at No. 5 over Hu to extend the advantage to 2-0. UC Davis answered at No. 4, where Vivian Gallaway defeated Franco 6-2, 3-6, 6-0, but LBSU quickly regained control.
Daisy Carpenter pushed the lead to 3-1 with a 6-4, 6-2 victory over Bringas at No. 6. Thea Jagare added another key point at No. 3, defeating Youssef 6-3, 6-4 to give the Beach a 4-1 edge and bring the match to clinch position.
Cecilia Costa secured the deciding point at No. 2, battling through a tight first-set tiebreak before pulling away for a 7-6 (7-1), 6-3 win against Ikemori. UC Davis picked up its second point at the top spot, where Marakhtanova outlasted De Simone 6-4, 5-7, 10-8 in a third-set super tiebreak, closing the final margin at 5-2.
