
Long Beach State Defeats East Carolina, 4-3

Justine Dondonay clinched the match for the Beach with an exciting three-set victory
LONG BEACH, Calif. – Long Beach State turned in a solid performance on Friday at Rhodes Tennis Center on their way to a 4-3 victory over East Carolina.
The Beach (5-4) claimed the doubles point behind a pair of wins from tandems Mathilde Tranberg and Paulina Franco Martinessi, and Rhona Cook and Peppi Ramstedt.
Tranberg and Franco Martinessi earned a 6-3 win at flight three against ECU's (6-6) duo of Anne Lou Champion and Kim Auerswald. Cook and Ramstedt won the point with a 7-5 win at flight one versus Ines Bachir and Alisha Hussain.
Sarah Medik put the Beach up 2-0 as she cruised to a 6-0, 6-0 win over Hussain at flight five in singles. Long Beach State added to its lead after Doga Akyurek took down Isabella Ortiz, 6-3, 6-1 at flight four.
With Long Beach leading 3-0, the Pirate picked up their first point of the day at flight six. ECU's Joan Madi came back to defeat Tranberg, 0-6, 6-3, 6-3 to get East Carolina on the board.
Justine Dondonay competed at flight three and earned the first set win, 6-1, over Martina Muzzolon. However, Muzzolon came back to take the second set, 6-3. It was a battle at court three, but Dondonay emerged victorious as she downed Muzzolon, 6-2, to win the game and clinch the match.
Dondonay's victory was key, as Cook came up short at flight one dropping the game, 1-6, 7-6 (2), 4-6 to Bachir. The Pirates tacked on their final point with a win by retirement at flight two.
Long Beach State will be back in action on Saturday, March 9 when the Beach host UC Davis at 11 a.m. at Rhodes Tennis Center. Live scoring will be available via BeachLiveStats.com.
