Long Beach State closed out the non-conference season with a 4-3 nail-biter win over Brown
LONG BEACH, Calif. – Doga Akyurek battled through two grueling tiebreakers to clinch the match as Long Beach State defeated Brown, 4-3, in a nail-biter of a contest on Tuesday at Rhodes Tennis Center.
The Beach (9-5) played their fifth match of the season that came down to the final singles set. This time it was Akyurek, a sophomore from Izmir, Turkey, who was the heroine as she defeated Brown's (9-7) Dani Ben-Abraham, 7-6 (8), 7-6 (7) for the victory.
Long Beach State began the nearly four-hour contest clinching the doubles point. The duo of Paulina Franco Martinessi and Mathilde Tranberg secured their 11th doubles victory of the year as they took down Phoebe Peus and Gabby Soliman, 6-3. The pair have now won six-straight doubles matches.
At flight one, Rhona Cook and Peppi Ramstedt clinched the point with a 6-4 win over Ali Benedetto and Addison Ahlstrom. The tandem of Cook and Ramstedt is 9-3 on the year in doubles competition and have won their last four-straight doubles contests.
Brown was quick to even the score at 1-1 as Anne Yang defeated Hana Becirovic Novak, 6-0, 6-0 at flight six. Cook gave the Beach back their lead as she took down Benedetto, 6-0, 6-4, at the top flight.
The Bears once again tied the match, this time at 2-2, as Soliman earned a 6-4, 6-1 win at flight two over Justine Dondonay. From there, Brown took its first lead of the match as Sarah Medik dropped a tough 6-4, 6-1 battle at flight three to the Bears' Nora Lee.
Trailing 3-2, Long Beach State got a solid performance from Ramstedt at flight four. The junior out of Helsinki, Finland, evened the match at 3-3 with an exciting 6-4, 6-1 victory over Ahlstrom.
With the match knotted at 3-3, Akyurek was in a battle with Ben-Abraham at flight five. Akyurek had already claimed the first set 7-6 (8) but was down 2-5 in the second set. With her teammates behind her, Akyurek rallied to force the tiebreaker before winning an emotionally and physically exhausting set, 7-6 (7), to win the match, 4-3.
Long Beach State has won three-straight matches as the Beach get ready to host Big West rival Cal State Fullerton on Friday, March 29 at 2 p.m. at Rhodes Tennis Center. Live scoring will be available via BeachLiveStats.com.
