LBSU Beach Tennis Wins Fourth-Straight With 5-2 Win Over Cal State Fullerton

Rhona Cook won a tough three-setter at the top flight to clinch the match victory for the Beach
LONG BEACH, Calif. – The Long Beach State Women's Tennis team turned in a strong performance in another four-plus hour match as the Beach extended their winning streak to four with a 5-2 victory over Cal State Fullerton on Friday at Rhodes Tennis Center.
The Beach (10-5) have now won six of their last seven matches and have improved to 4-1 in Big West action. Meanwhile, the Titans fall to 9-7 overall and 2-3 in league play.
"This was our second match this week that was over four hours long," Long Beach State Head Coach Jenny Hilt-Costello said. "I'm proud of the team. They are doing whatever it takes, however long it takes, to get the win."
The conference rivals battled each other from the start of the contest. In doubles action, Rhona Cook and Peppi Ramstedt made quick work of Josie Usereau and Sein Myoing at the top flight as the Beach cruised to a 6-0 win. However, the ensuing doubles matches were closely contested.
At flight two, Fullerton's Natalie Duffy and Mariia Nikitash claimed a 6-3 win over Hana Becirovic Novak and Doga Akyurek.
With each team having won a doubles match, it came down to flight three where Paulina Franco Martinessi and Mathilde Tranberg edged Seha Yu and Milena Gevorgyan, 6-4, for the doubles point. It was Franco Martinessi and Tranberg's seventh-straight doubles victory as the duo improved to 12-1 on the year.
Long Beach State went up 2-0 on Cal State Fullerton thanks to a 7-5, 6-3, win by Sarah Medik at flight three. Medik did a solid job holding off Duffy for the victory.
From there, the Beach jumped out in front 3-0 after Akyurek defeated Gevorgyan in three sets. After dropping the first set, 6-3, Akyurek came back and won 6-2, 6-0 to give LBSU a comfortable lead.
However, Cal State Fullerton would make things interesting. The Titans won as courts six and four to cut Long Beach State's lead down to 3-2.
With the Titans inching closer, Cook took matters into her own hands and won an exciting three-set battle over Usereau at flight one. In the first set, Cook rallied from a 6-5 deficit to win 7-6. Usereau came back and claimed the second set, 6-0. With pressure mounting, Cook turned in a gritty performance and earned a 6-2 set three win to give Long Beach State the match, 4-2.
With some of the pressure off, Justine Dondonay was still competing at flight two. The senior finished the match off strong as she took down Myoung, 6-3, 5-7, 7-6. In the third set, Dondonay showed her resilience as she fought off three match points to win her fourth match point of the day on her way to helping the Beach take the match, 5-2.
Long Beach State will hit the road for its next three contests as the Beach travel to Cal Poly (April 5), UC Santa Barbara (April 6), and CSUN (April 12).
