Beach Tennis Shows Resiliency In 4-3 Win At Cal Poly

Long Beach State persevered three rain delays and a venue change on the road as the Beach extended their winning streak to five
SAN LUIS OBISPO, Calif. – Long Beach Women's Tennis battled more than their opponent on Friday. The Beach persevered through three rain delays, heavy winds, and a venue change on the road, but still managed to defeat a tough Cal Poly squad, 4-3, at the San Luis Obispo Country Club.
"I am so incredibly proud of the team," Long Beach State Head Coach Jenny Hilt-Costello said. "We battled through three rain delays and strong winds to come up with a road win over a very good team."
The match, which was originally scheduled for 12 noon, did not begin until 3:15 p.m. after it had been moved from the Mustang Tennis Complex to the San Luis Obispo Country club due to wetness on the Cal Poly courts.
Despite the delays, the Beach (11-5, 5-1 Big West) came out strong and won the doubles point over Cal Poly (7-7, 2-2 Big West). The tandem of Rhona Cook and Peppi Ramstedt earned a 6-4 win at No. 1 doubles, then the duo of Paulina Franco Martinessi and Mathilde Tranberg fell, 6-3 to Cal Poly's Kennedy Buntrock and Eliza Bates at flight three. The pair of Doga Akyurek and Justine Dondonay played doules together for the first time since the fall season on October 21. However, the two fought through a tough match up at flight two and gutted out a 7-6 (7-5) victory to give the Beach a 1-0 lead.
Following doubles competition, the two teams were forced to sit through another rain delay before singles action could begin.
Once again, the Beach showed their resiliency as they kicked off singles competition with a win at the top flight. Cook took down Delanie Dunkle, 6-2, 6-0 to put Long Beach State on top 2-0.
With things leaning in the Beach's favor, the Mustangs battled back and evened the match (2-2) after claiming victories at flights three and five. At court three, Sarah Medik fell, 6-2, 6-0, to Alexandra Ozerets, and a court five, Akyurek came up short, 6-4, 6-2, against Romane Mosse.
With the match even at 2-2, the Beach got a strong showing from Ramstedt at flight four. The junior from Helsinki, Finland turned in a gritty performance as she defeated Buntrock, 6-3, 6-4, as the Beach regained the lead, 3-2.
At flight six, Tranberg made her first appearance in singles competition since March 8. The senior out of Horsholm, Denmark made the most of her return to the lineup as she edged Bates, 7-5, in the first set. Tranberg and Bates exchanged points back and forth in the second set, but Tranberg emerged victorious as she clinched the game and match for the Beach with a 6-4 win.
With LBSU up 4-2, Dondonay was still playing at flight two. She'd dropped the opening set, 6-3, to Peyton Dunkle and was in the middle of a tiebreaker in the second set. Despite her efforts, Dondonay came up on the wrong side of a 7-6 (7-3) game. However, Long Beach State was victorious, 4-3, as the Beach extended its winning streak to five.
Long Beach State will have a quick turnaround as the Beach will travel to Santa Barbara to face the Gauchos tomorrow, April 6 at 11 a.m. The contest will be live steamed via UCSBGauchos.com.
