Long Beach State returns to action Friday against San Jose State.
Long Beach State (2-15) got off to a fast start in a wild opening game against No. 17 Texas A&M (17-1).
In the top of the first inning Sara Olson, who went 2-for-2 against the Aggies, kicked off the game with a single. After an error left two on, Sinclair Lawhorn singled to score the opening run of the game with no outs. The Beach pushed across a second run, and then an RBI triple from Lilyanna Martinez put Long Beach State in front 3-0 before Texas A&M had a chance to bat.
The Aggies would bounce quickly back in the bottom half. Amari Harper singled to start the inning, and after a walk, a Trinity Cannon double got Texas A&M on the board. Home runs from Julia Cotrill and Rylen Wiggins gave the Aggies the lead before the end of the first at 5-3.
Mo Quinlan entered the circle for the Beach and quieted the rally and worked a scoreless second inning, but the Aggies broke out again with a second five-run inning. Cotrill had the big hit, a three-run homer for her second home run of the game as the Aggies took a 10-3 lead.
Long Beach State bounced back with a big inning of their own in the fourth. Savannah Magadan and Olson worked back-to-back walks to start the rally, and Bickar singled to score Olson to begin the scoring. Cassie Camou followed with an RBI single, and then Shaylee Ackerman walked two more to plate a run on a bases-loaded walk from Makayla Medellin. Lilyanna Martinez brought in a fourth run with a groundout and the Beach had trimmed the lead to 10-7 at the end of the inning.
Quinlan walked a pair to start the fourth though, and the Aggies broke through with another big inning after a two-run double to Eschete started a four-run frame in the bottom of the fourth for Texas A&M.
Kate Barnett worked a scoreless fifth inning for Long Beach State, but a two-run home run from Cannon ended the contest in the sixth inning at 16-7.
Another shortened contest came in the nightcap as No. 13 Florida (17-2) controlled the action against the Beach. Ava Brown, Olivia Miller and Mackenzie Wooten limited Long Beach State to a pair of hits, and took a 3-0 lead after a bases-clearing double by Jocelyn Erickson.
The Gators added three more runs in the second inning and five more in the third, and finally closed out a 15-0 win with a two-run home run in the top of the fifth inning from Mia Williams.
Long Beach State will remain at the tournament through Saturday, playing one game tomorrow against San Jose State. First pitch is scheduled for 12:30 p.m., and live stats will be provided at www.beachlivestats.com.
