Late Inning Dominance Sees Long Beach State Run Rule San Jose State

Down 6-2, Long Beach State scored 12 unanswered runs to defeat the Spartans in six innings.
San Jose State (5-5) took an early lead in the second inning, as Reina Zermeno singled and Ahmiya Noriega hit a two-run home run to give the Spartans a quick lead.
Long Beach State (3-15) bounced right back in the bottom half. Jocylyn Vidal singled to start the inning, coming around to score on a triple by Carly Robbins. Robbins then scored on an error as the Beach evened the score a 2-2.
A disastrous defensive inning from the Beach in the third led the Spartans reclaim the lead, as four errors in the inning led to four runs as San Jose State took a 6-2 lead.
Long Beach State showed off the same fight that helped them beat Michigan earlier in the week. Makayla Medellin doubled and came around to score in the third as the Beach avoided a shutdown inning. In the circle, Sophia Fernandez entered and threw a 1-2-3 fourth and was excellent in relief, earning the win while allowing just one base-runnner on one hit over three innings.
The offensive work for the Beach really started in the fifth. Jacquelyn Bickar singled to start the fifth, and after an error, a two-run single from Vidal cut the lead to 6-5. With the bases loaded, Robbins was plunked, tying the score, and then Sara Olson hit a two-run single to give the Beach an 8-6 lead after five innings.
Medellin would start and end the sixth as the Beach kept their momentum going. The sophomore hit her first home run of the year, a solo shot to add an insurance run at 9-6. With two on, freshman Malayna Terrones hit her second home run of the season, a three-run shot to continue to grow the lead. Robbins then grabbed her second big hit of the game as LBSU went back-to-back making the score 13-6 and putting an early end within reach. Olson and Bickar hit back-to-back singles to put runners on the corners, and then Medellin finished off the game with an RBI single, her second hit of the inning and third of the game.
Long Beach State had five players with multiple hits in the game, led by Medellin who was a triple short of the cycle in her first start since the Bear Down Fiesta. Olson, Bickar, Vidal, and Robbins each had a pair of hits as well on Friday.
Long Beach State will finish off the week Saturday with two more games at the Judy Garman Classic. The Beach will start the day at 10 .a.m. against Oregon State before a rematch with Fresno State immediately following. Live stats for both games can be found at www.beachlivestats.com.
