Women’s Tennis Sweeps UC San Diego In Big West Action

Peppi Ramstedt wins flight three 6-2, 6-4 to clinch the match for the Beach
LONG BEACH, Calif. – The Long Beach State Women's Tennis team turned in an excellent showing on Saturday afternoon as the Beach swept Big West opponent UC San Diego, 7-0, at Rhodes Tennis Center.
With the victory, the Beach improves to 3-2 overall and 2-0 in Big West action. Meanwhile, the Tritons fall to 2-7 on the year and 0-2 in league competition.
Long Beach State started the match off with a strong doubles competition performance. The Beach were led by Doga Akyurek and Hana Becirovic Novak who made quick work of UCSD's Sophie Pearson and Naomi Nguyen, 6-1. LBSU won the doubles point at court one where Rhona Cook and Peppi Ramstedt downed Katelyn Vu and Kelly Leung, 6-1. In flight three, the tandem of Mathilde Tranberg and Paulina Franco Martinessi completed the doubles sweep with a 6-3 victory over Grace Gamal and Cincy Chen.
With a 1-0 lead after winning the doubles point, the Beach moved into singles action. Akyurek was incredible as she put Long Beach State up 2-0 on UC San Diego after defeating Gamal, 6-1, 6-1. At flight one, Cook cruised to a 6-2, 6-0 victory over Leung to give Long Beach State a 3-0 advantage.
Ramstedt battled Nguyen at flight three and came away with a 6-2, 6-4 win to clinch the match for the Beach.
With the Beach leading 4-0, flights four, five, and six continued. Becirovic Novak played a tough three-setter on court six. She and Chen from UCSD matched each other evenly. Becirovic Novak claimed the first set, 7-5, before dropping the second set 5-7. In a grueling third set, she managed to hold off Chen, 10-8, for the win.
The final flights were just as competitive. Justine Dondonay went head-to-head with Vu and won a 7-6 (5), 6-7 (4), 10-7 battle to give LBSU a 6-0 advantage. The match was finished at court five where Sarah Medik and Sophie Pearson fought through two long and evenly matched sets. Medik, however, emerged victorious as she won 7-5, 7-6 (3) to complete the sweep.
Long Beach State will host Sacramento State on Friday, Feb. 24 at 11 a.m. at Rhodes Tennis Center. Live scoring will be available via BeachLiveStats.com.
