Beach Tennis Comes Up Short In Hard-Fought Contest To Sacramento State, 4-3

Ramstedt, Dondonay, and Medik record wins for Long Beach State in the setback to Sacramento State on Saturday
LONG BEACH, Calif. – The Beach Tennis team turned in a solid performance on Saturday afternoon, but came up short in a 4-3 loss to Sacramento State at Rhodes Tennis Center.
Long Beach State (3-3) got off to a slow start dropping all three doubles contests to Sacramento State (6-3) as the Hornets won the doubles point. Sac State went up 2-0 as Maddy Ferreros held off Doga Akyurek, 6-3, 6-3, at flight two.
However, the Beach rallied as Peppi Ramstedt defeated Weronika Ejsmont, 6-3, 6-2, at court three to give Long Beach State its first point of the day.
After Rhona Cook was edged by Mayya Gorbunova at flight one, 6-4, 7-6 (6), the Beach found themselves trailing the Hornets, 3-1.
With their backs against the wall, Long Beach State turned in a gritty comeback effort as Justine Dondonay knocked off Lou Baudouin, 6-2, 2-6, 6-3 at court four.
Sarah Medik's exciting 6-4, 7-6 (6) victory over Reese Walker at flight five evened the score at 3-3 as the Beach were back in the game.
With all eyes on flight six, Hana Becirovic Novak fought hard against Irene Riva. Riva claimed the first set, 7-5, and Becirovic Novak gutted out a thrilling 7-6 (9) set two win. However, Riva took the third set, 6-0, to earn the win for the Hornets.
Long Beach State hits the road for a pair of matches on the Hawaiian Islands next week. The Beach will take on Hawaii Pacific on Saturday, March 2 at 1 p.m., before facing Big West foe Hawaii on Sunday, March 3 at 4:30 p.m.
