The duo of Paulina Franco Martinessi and Mathilde Tranberg picked up the Beach’s lone win of the day
SAN DIEGO – Long Beach State went head-to-head with San Diego State at the Aztec Tennis Center on Friday afternoon, and came up on the wrong end of a 7-0 contest. The Beach battled, but missed opportunities led to the squad's second loss of the young season.
"Tough loss today," Long Beach State Head Coach Jenny Hilt-Costello said. "We battled, but let some opportunities go which cost us some games and sets. We are ready to get back at it tomorrow against UC San Diego."
Long Beach State (2-2) came into the contest having won each doubles point thus far. The Beach got off to a strong start as the tandem of Paulina Franco Martinessi and Mathilde Tranberg defeated Gloria Alogo and Zoe Olmos, 6-3.
However, the Aztecs (5-1) came back to win the doubles point as Yasmine Kabbaj and Myah Petchey held off Rhona Cook and Peppi Ramstedt, 6-4, before Andjela Skrobonja and Andreea Velcea clinched the doubles point with a 6-4 victory over Doga Akyurek and Hana Becirovic Novak.
Singles action saw SDSU earn the second point of the day at flight three as Petchey earned a 6-2, 6-0 win over Ramstedt. The Aztecs extended their lead to 3-0 as Olmos won flight six 6-2, 6-2 over Franco Martinessi.
Akyurek battled hard at flight two, but eventually dropped a 6-2, 6-3 decision to Skrobonia as San Diego State clinched the match.
Cook lost on court one to Kabbaj 6-3, 6-3 in another closely contested match, while Medik put up a fight before falling 6-3, 6-1 to Alogo.
With all but one court finished, all attention turned to court six where senior Justine Dondonay was in a three-set battle with Velcea. Dondonay had beat out Velcea in the first set, 7-5, but had fallen 6-0 in the second. The two were in an exciting back-and-forth contest that ultimately was won by SDSU by a score of 11-9.
Long Beach State looks to get back on the winning track on Saturday, Feb. 17 when the Beach host UC San Diego in a Big West match-up at Rhodes Tennis Center at noon. Live scoring will be available via BeachLiveStats.com.
