Softball Drops Two Saturday To No. 13 Arkansas, Omaha

2/16/2024 4:21:00 PM | Softball

The Beach had two solid starts in the circle but the long ball undid the team on the day.

TUCSON, Ariz. – Long Beach State got a pair of solid starts from Shannon Haddad and Eryka Gonzales, but a pair of two-home run games from both opponents set back the Beach against No. 13 Arkansas and Omaha.

Long Beach State (0-7) had the opportunity to strike the first blow against Arkansas (5-1) in the day's opener. Sinclair Lawhorn drew a leadoff walk, and after a single by Durazo, the Beach had two on but were unable to bring home the run as pinch runner Corissa Sweet was retired at home to close the inning.

The Razobacks took their first lead in the top of the bottom of the third as Bri Ellis hot a solo home run to left field giving Arkansas a 1-0 lead. Ellis came through again in the fifth inning with a two-run home run to cap a three-run inning for Arkansas. The Razorbacks then added three more unearned runs in the sixth to close out a 7-0 win over the Beach.

The second game was even tighter, as Gonzales limited Omaha (5-1) to just three hits on the day. The first came in the top of the first, however, as Sydney Thomason hit a solo home run in the first to give the Mavericks and early lead. The Beach had a promising start to the frame as well as Sara Olson drew a walk and Jacquelyn Bickar reached on a bunt single, but the key hit didn't come and Omaha closed the inning with a 1-0 lead.

That score held until the sixth, when on her third at-bat with one runner on Thomason struck again, her second home run to left field of the day to account for the entirety of the scoring in the contest, a 3-0 win for Omaha.

Long Beach State closes out their time at the Bear Down Fiesta on Saturday morning with a rematch against Omaha beginning at 9 a.m. Live coverage will be on FloSoftball.
