Softball Loses Finale At Bear Down Fiesta

2/17/2024 10:21:00 AM | Softball

Long Beach State opened up an early lead behind a four-run first inning.

TUCSON, Ariz. – A promising start with a four-run first inning for Long Beach State was undone with a seven-run second for Omaha, as the Mavericks handed the Beach at 7-5 defeat in the team's final game during the Bear Down Fiesta.

Long Beach State (0-9) got off to their best start of the Bear Down Fiesta, immediately jumping to a lead over Omaha (6-2). Lilyanna Martinez started the bottom of the first with a single, and Makayla Medellin reached on an error to put two on. A sacrifice fly brought home the first run of the frame, and then with the bases loaded, a walk to Savannah Magadan made the score 2-0. Carly Robbins then hit a two-run single to give the Beach a 4-0 lead after the first.

Omaha bounced right back however with a big inning in the second. Long Beach State picked up two outs with only one run coming in to score, but the Maverick lineup ticked back over to the top, and a double from Lynsey Tucker, a single from Maggie O'Brien, and a three-run home run from Emma Durr gave Omaha a 7-4 lead after two.

For Long Beach State, freshman Kate Barnett came in at that point and helped keep the game within reach, pitching 5.0 innings of scoreless relief.

The Beach cut into the lead with a two-out rally in the third. Robbins singled to load the bases, and Rebekah Durazo was plunked to cut the lead to 7-5. Long Beach State threatened once more in the seventh with another two-out rally. An error and a Sara Olson single put the tying run on base for the Beach, but Omaha was able to close out the win.

Long Beach State will return to California to take part in another major tournament, facing five teams as part of the Mary Nutter Collegiate Classic in Cathedral City. The team's time in the desert starts on Friday, February 23 with games against BYU and No. 14 Oregon.
