Long Beach State battled back in the second game but lost both in five innings.
TUCSON, Ariz. – Long Beach State scored three runs to cut an early lead in the second game in half at Arizona, but the rally was cut short and the Wildcats pulled away to ultimately take both games in the first day at the Bear Down Fiesta between Arizona and the Beach.
Long Beach State (0-7) fell behind quickly in the opening game, as a pair of two-run home runs from Arizona (7-0) gave the Wildcats a 4-0 lead after the bottom of the first. The Wildcats added four more in the second, taking advantage of a three-run home run from Kaiah Altmeyer to open an 8-0 lead over the Beach.
Freshman Kate Barnett entered in relief and held the Wildcats to one hit and no additional runs over 2.2 innings pitched, but the damage was done in the opener. Jocylyn Vidal and Makayla Medellin had the hits for the Beach in the team's first run-rule defeat of the season, 8-0 (5).
In the second game, Arizona once again took an early lead, bursting out to a 4-0 lead for the second straight game after Allie Skaggs cleaned up two walks to start the game with a home run. The Beach held on for a scoreless second, but Arizona added two more in the bottom of the third.
Corissa Sweet started the fourth with a hit by pitch, and Medellin followed with a single to two on for the Beach. Sinclair Lawhorn followed with her second double of the season to score Sweet, getting the Beach on the board with no outs in the frame. Carly Robbins followed with a one-out single to score Medellin, and with the bases loaded, a second hit batter, this time Rebekah Durazo to cut the lead in half at 6-3 and leave the bases loaded, bringing the go-ahead run to the plate.
Miranda Stoddard came on for the Wildcats and were able to get out of the inning with no more damage. Arizona added one additional run to make the score 7-3 through four, and finished off the contest with four additional runs in the fifth.
The Beach will play two more games on Friday, first facing No. 13 Arkansas at 10 a.m. PT before facing off for the first of two games against Omaha in Tucson immediately following. Live streaming will be available through FloSoftball.
