Jada Crawshaw's 17 Leads 4 Beach Players In Double Figures
SAN LUIS OBISPO, Calif.—Cal Poly defeated Long Beach State. 84-76 in Big West women's basketball action Saturday afternoon at the Mott Athletics Center.
Long Beach State jumped out to a 13-5 lead. Led by Savannah Tucker, who went 3-for-3, the Beach was 10-of-14 from the floor in the first quarter (71.4%) and led by 14, 27-13, after 10 minutes.
The hot shooting continued in the second quarter as Jada Crawshaw made all five field goal attempts. Despite allowing LBSU to shoot 60% from the field (9-of-15) while only shooting (5-of-14), the Mustangs kept charging.
Cal Poly drew nine Long Beach State fouls in the second quarter, making all 14 free throw attempts they attempted. The Beach matched Cal Poly, going 8-for-8 at the charity stripe, including 3-for-3 from Crawshaw. Led By Crawshaw's 13, LBSU led 53-38 at halftime.
The Mustangs made 50% of their field goal attempts in the third quarter. Annika Shah posted eight of Cal Poly's 20 third-quarter points as the Mustangs cut the lead to 66-58 after 30 minutes.
Cal Poly began the fourth with a 12-6 spurt that cut the Beach advantage to 72-70 at the media timeout with just over four minutes remaining. Natalia Ackerman tied the score with a layup out of the media. Bradshaw drove the lane and was fouled on the ensuing LBSU possession. She missed both free throw attempts, keeping the score tied.
Mary Carter's three-pointer at the 3:18 mark gave the Mustangs their first game lead. Cal Poly got a stop on the Long Beach State offensive end and drew a foul, sending Ania McNicholas to the free throw line. She connected on both attempts for a five-point advantage.
Davai Matthews's layup at 2:10 made it a one-possession game. With under a minute to play, Shah's layup again put the Mustangs up by four. Matthews was fouled the next time down for the Beach. The 6-3 forward sank both free throws. The Mustangs called timeout with 44.1 seconds to advance the ball to halfcourt.
Ackerman was fouled as two seconds came off the clock. Ackerman missed the first and made the second, allowing Cal Poly to go up by four. Long Beach State failed to convert, leading to Ackerman being fouled on the rebound of a Beach miss. She made both free throws to increase the lead to six, 82-76. Long Beach State called time out at 24.5 to advance the ball. Ackerman rebounded an LBSU missed field goal attempt and again made two free throws for what proved to be the game's final points.
