Balanced Attack Leads Long Beach State To A 78-52 Rout Of UC Davis

Casey Valenti-Paea had 17 points and eight rebounds, while Jada Crawshaw added 15 points and eight boards in the Beach’s home victory
LONG BEACH, Calif. – Long Beach State played a solid game as a collective unit on Thursday night inside the Walter Pyramid as the Beach cruised to a convincing, 78-52, victory over UC Davis.
The Beach (9-14, 4-9 Big West) took an early lead over the Aggies (13-11, 9-5 Big West) and never trailed. Long Beach State led UC Davis in rebounding (42-40), steals (12-10), points off turnovers (24-10), points in the paint (34-14), and points off the bench (29-19).
Casey Valenti-Paea led all scorers with 17 points on the night as she shot 66.7 percent (6-9) from the field, with two triples, while adding eight rebounds, three assists, and three steals.
Freshman Jada Crawshaw also had an excellent night as she finished the game with 15 points, eight boards, three steals, and one assist.
Long Beach State came out of the gate hot. The Beach quickly jumped out in front to a 5-0 lead after a layup from Davai Matthews followed by a three from Patricia Chung. By the media timeout, LBSU owned an 8-3 advantage and Chung was responsible for six of the Beach's eight points. Coming out of the break, UC Davis scored seven-straight points to tie the game at 10-all with 3:08 on the clock. However the Beach would close the frame with five-consecutive points to take a 17-12 lead into the second quarter.
Davis opened the second quarter with five-straight points to knot the score at 17-all at 8:13. However, that was the last time the conference foes would be tied as Long Beach State strung together an 11-0 run to jump out in front, 28-17 at 8:13. The Beach added to their lead with seven-straight points and held a 38-23 advantage at halftime.
The Beach turned in their best performance of the game in the third quarter. LBSU shot 50.0 percent (9-18) from the field and the Beach defense kept UC Davis scoreless for the first 7:18 of the frame. During that span, the LBSU offense never missed a beat as the Beach went on a 15-0 run to take a commanding 53-23 lead. Valenti-Paea scored all seven of her third quarter points during that run as LBSU outscored the Aggies 21-6 in the frame and took a 30-point lead (59-29) into the final quarter.
Despite the Aggies' effort in the final 10 minutes of action, Long Beach State stayed in control and rolled to a 26-point (78-52) victory.
Cheyenne Givens concluded the game with nine points for the Beach, while Matthews, Chung, and Savannah Tucker each chipped in eight.
For UC Davis, Tova Sabel led the team with 12 points, five rebounds, three steals, and two assists. Meanwhile, Evanne Turner added 10 points, three assists, and one rebound. Megan Norris posted seven boards to go along with four blocks, and two points.
Long Beach State will be back in action on Saturday, Feb. 17 when the Beach host CSUN at 3 p.m. The contest will be broadcast live on ESPN+.
