The Beach start out strong but fall to LMU, 5-2, at home
LONG BEACH, Calif. – The Long Beach State Women's Tennis team started out strong on Friday afternoon against Loyola Marymount, but ultimately dropped a hard-fought contest, 5-2, for the Beach's first loss of the year.
LBSU (2-1) got off to a hot start as the Beach breezed through doubles action winning the doubles point. From there, Long Beach State and Loyola Marymount (1-2) found themselves deadlocked at 2-2 in a battle that could have gone either way. However, it was the Lions that pulled out the 5-2 win as the Beach put up a fight, but came up short.
The duo of Doga Akyurek and Hana Becirovic Novak wasted no time in their doubles contest in flight two. The pair commanded the court and rolled to a quick 6-0 victory over LMU's tandem of Kim-Michaela Zahaj and Romane Longueville.
Over on court three, Mathilde Tranberg and Paulina Franco Martinessi clinched the double point for the Beach with a 6-4 win over Fiona Arrese and Anastasia Bozova.
Akyurek faced Isabella Tcherkes-Zade in flight two of singles action and dropped match 6-2, 6-1 as LMU evened the match score at 1-1.
However, the Beach regained their match lead after Justine Dondonay downed Bozova 6-3, 6-4 at court six.
The battle between the two Southern California squads ensued as LMU's Carlota Molina earned a 6-3, 6-3 win at flight one over Rhona Cook to even the match at 2-2.
With a tight contest on the court, the battle was on at flight five. Tranberg had dropped the first set 7-5 to LMU's Zahaj and eventually came up on the wrong side of a 6-2 second set that put the Lions up 3-2.
All attention was turned to flight three where Ramstedt and Longueville were trading points in a back-and-forth affair. Longueville won the first set, 6-3, and Ramstedt had taken the second 6-2. With the match on the line, Longueville managed to take down Ramstedt, 6-2 to win the match for Loyola Marymount.
The contest on court four between Sarah Medic and Arrese was still going. Arrese had edged Medic, 7-6, in the first set and the two were in a close battle in the second set. However, it was Arrese who emerged the victor, winning 6-4, to give LMU its first win of the young season.
