The Beach score the most points in a single game since 1987 as Mykelle Richards leads the way with a career-high 21 points
LONG BEACH, Calif. – The Long Beach State Women's Basketball team closed out the non-conference portion of the schedule in a big way. The Beach turned in a dominating performance defeating Bethesda, 122-49 on Monday afternoon at the Walter Pyramid.
The contest for the Beach (6-5) saw several milestones. The 122 points is the most scored by a Long Beach State Women's Basketball team in 37 years as the Beach took down Pacific, 123-65, on March 5, 1987. Additionally, the victory was the first 100-plus point win for LBSU since Jan. 15, 2006 when the Beach defeated CSUN on the road by a score of 102-62. Today's contest was the Beach's first 100-plus point game in 10 years as LBSU dropped a 107-102 overtime decision to Cal Poly on Jan. 18, 2014.
Long Beach set a new program record for points in a quarter. The Beach poured in 46 points in the third quarter besting the previous record of 39 that was set in 2015 when LBSU dropped 39 points against Portland State in the first quarter on November 15, 2015.
With the win, the Beach handed Bethesda (0-15) its 15th-straight loss of the season.
Freshman Mykelle Richards led half a dozen double-figure scorers for the Beach with a career-high 21 points. She just missed a double-double with nine rebounds, seven steals, and two assists.
Lovely Sonnier, Savannah Tucker, and JaQuoia Jones-Brown all finished with 16 points. Sonnier and Jones-Brown also pulled down 12 rebounds each as the pair recorded double-doubles in the contest.
Rounding out Long Beach State's double-digit scorers were Rachel Loobie and Patricia Chung who registered 15 and 13 points, respectively. Chung also led the Beach with six assists, while adding two boards, and a pair of steals.
Long Beach State opened the game on a 10-0 run as Tucker got things going with a jumper followed by a three. The Beach held Bethesda scoreless for the first three minutes of action during that run. Following a Bethesda layup, LBSU scored nine-straight points to extend their lead to 17 (19-2) with 6:03 on the clock. The Beach controlled the remainder of the frame as they led, 31-15 at the end of the quarter.
Bethesda cut the Beach's lead down to 12 (31-19) after starting the second quarter with four consecutive points. But Long Beach State would quickly find its groove again scoring nine-straight points to go up 40-19 at 5:27. The Beach continued to dominate the Lion Angels as they opened up a 30-point advantage (50-20) with 2:20 remaining in the quarter. A triple from freshman Christy Reynoso kicked off a 6-0 LBSU run that put Long Beach State on top, 56-21, at halftime.
The Beach started the second half on another 10-0 run as they jumped ahead of the Lion Angels, 66-21, in the first 90 seconds. Long Beach State continued to add to its lead with a pair of 7-0 runs that gave LBSU an 80-26 advantage at the 5:50 mark. After scoring 15-consecutive points late in the third quarter, Long Beach State went into the fourth with a 102-35 lead.
In the final 10 minutes of action, Long Beach State led by as many as 77 points (122-45) with 1:53 remaining. The Beach would go on to win by 73 points (122-49). The 73-point win will go down in the record book as the fourth-largest margin of victory by a Long Beach State Women's Basketball team in program history. It is the Beach's largest margin of victory since 1990 when LBSU defeated UC Irvine by 71 points (114-43) on Feb. 17, 1990.
Samantha Ballantyne contributed 40% of the Lion Angels' points as she finished the game with 20. She also added eight rebounds, but turned the ball over six times.
