Beach Women’s Basketball Takes Down UC Riverside, 63-48, On The Road

Senior guard Savannah Tucker recorded her third 20-plus point game of the season

RIVERSIDE, Calif. – Senior guard Savannah Tucker turned in a 22-point performance to led Long Beach State to a 63-48 victory over UC Riverside on Thursday night at the SRC Arena in Riverside, Calif.

With the win, the Beach improve to 7-5 overall and a perfect 3-0 in Big West action. Meanwhile, the Highlanders drop to 6-7 on the year and suffer their first loss of conference play as they fall to 2-1 in league play.

Tucker led all scorers with her third 20-plus point showing of the season which marks her seventh of her career. She shot 64.3% from the field (9-14) and made two three-pointers in all 40 minutes of action. She also contributed five rebounds, three assists, one steal, and one block.



Also registering double-digits were Mykelle Richards (14 points) and Lovely Sonnier (10 points).

Rachel Loobie did a good job cleaning up the glass picking up nine rebounds, while Sonnier added seven boards.

The game got off to a slow start as Long Beach State found themselves down 8-6 to UC Riverside at the media timeout. Following the break in action, the Highlanders used a 7-0 run to take a 15-8 over the Beach. Loobie managed to break the scoring drought bringing the Beach within five (15-10) by the end of the quarter.

Long Beach State wasted no time getting going in the second quarter. The Beach opened the frame on an 8-0 run thanks to five points from Richards to give LBSU its first lead of the game (18-15) at 7:42. The Highlanders got on the board at 6:48 after being held scoreless by the Long Beach State defense for the first three and a half minutes of action. The Beach held the lead for the remainder of the frame as LBSU took a 27-24 lead into halftime.

The Beach continued their solid style of play into the third quarter. At 4:33, Crawshaw hit a jumper to open up a 10-point lead (37-27) for the Beach. However, UCR would counter with an 8-0 run that cut Long Beach State's lead down to one (43-42) with just over one minute remaining. LBSU would close the frame scoring five-straight to take a 48-42 lead into the fourth.

The fourth quarter was all Long Beach. LBSU used an 11-0 run to kick off the final 10 minutes of action as the Beach jumped out in front to a 59-42 advantage. Meanwhile the Long Beach State defense held UC Riverside scoreless for the first five and a half minutes of action. From there, the Beach cruised to a 63-48 win.

UC Riverside was led by Makayla Rose who finished the game with 19 points. She was the Highlanders lone double-figure scorer. Gemma Cutler and Shelley Duchemin each tallied nine points, while Cutler led the squad with six rebounds.

Long Beach State will return to the Walter Pyramid on Saturday, Jan. 4 when the Beach host CSUN at 2 p.m. The game will be broadcast live on ESPN+.
