Men’s Basketball Finishes Non-Conference On Five Game Winning Streak

Long Beach State pulled away from La Sierra in the second half for an 83-57 victory Sunday.
LONG BEACH, Calif. – Long Beach State got big production from their bench and stellar guard play as usual, pulling away from La Sierra in the second half for am 83-57 win. With the victory, Long Beach State finished non-conference play on a five-game winning streak, having not lost a game in the month of December.
Long Beach State (6-8, 2-0 Big West) finished the game with a season-high 17 assists, and shot over 50% from the floor for the fourth game in a row. The Beach got a lift from their bench players, as Christian Richardson finished with 17 points, a career-high, while freshman Kam Martin led all scorers with 18 points on the night.
It took a while for Long Beach State to get going in the contest. After taking an early lead, 6-0 run from La Sierra (0-14) gave the Golden Eagles a lead withing the first five minutes. The Beach answered with a three from Martin, and responded with a 13-2 run of their own to lead 19-10 after the first ten minutes. The Golden Eagles hung around though, cutting the lead to five and trailing by seven at the half, 31-24.
The Long Beach State offense really got rolling in the second half, changing the complexion of the game. The Beach worked to get back to a more consistent offense, which worked well for the team as BSU shot 60% in the second half, and were aggressive in getting to their spots, going 23-of-24 from the line in the second half while shooting 92.9% in the game from the stripe.
Martin was a perfect 8-for-8 while Richardson was 7-for-7 from the free throw line, as the two helped Long Beach State increase their lead from seven up to 30 in the closing minutes against La Sierra.
Long Beach State had 42 points off the bench, with TJ Wainwright scoring 12 and Ramel Lloyd Jr. adding eight in his return to the lineup along with Richardson's career night. Devin Askew finished with 10 points but also had eight assists, guiding the offense along with Martin who finished with four assists to go with his game high scoring.
Winners of two games over Bold Week, Long Beach State resumes Big West action with a 2-0 record after the new year, hosting UC Riverside on Thursday, January 2 before traveling to Cal State Bakersfield.
