A trio of LBSU players record double-doubles as Abby Karich leads the way with a career-high 18 kills and 14 digs
IRVINE, Calif. – Long Beach State and UC Irvine went head-to-head in the Bren Events Center on Saturday and the Beach came away with a 3-1 [25-22, 26-24, 22-25, 25-21] victory to win their third-straight contest.
The Beach (15-9, 9-5 Big West) boasted a trio of players who recorded double-doubles, while the Anteaters (14-11, 8-6 Big West) were held to a .160 hitting percentage.
Senior outside hitter Abby Karich had a career-match with 18 kills and 14 digs to go along with two blocks and an assist. Her 18 kills tied her career-best as she came in just behind senior outside hitter Natalie Glenn who tallied 19 kills on a .462 hitting percentage (19-1-39). Glenn also posted a career-high six blocks, while adding five digs.
Also notching a double-double was freshman opposite Madi Maxwell. The rookie finished the match with 13 kills, 10 digs, two blocks, and one ace.
Senior setter Maura Hayes added a double-double of her own with 27 assists and 19 digs as she, along with freshman setter Madi Collins, led the Beach to a .229 attack percentage. Collins finished the match with 20 assists, while adding six digs.
Defensively, senior libero Jenna Giambi logged 15 digs in the back court, while senior middle blocker Kameron Bacon tied her career-high with nine blocks at the net.
The opening set began close as the conference rivals traded points back and forth. By the media timeout, LBSU held a 15-14 edge over UCI. The two teams would continue to battle it out until they found themselves all tied up at 21-all. Maxwell's kill broke the tie and forced the Anteaters to call a timeout. The break did little to stop Maxwell. Long Beach State came out of the break and Maxwell put down two kills before winning the set on an ace, 25-22.
The second set was a nail-biter that saw 21 ties and nine lead changes in a game that went to overtime. Long Beach State sent the game to set point, 24-23, on a kill from Karich, but the Anteaters once again tied it back up (24-all). Bacon and Karich teamed up for a block to give the Beach their second set point (25-24), before Bacon and Glenn posted the game-winning block as LBSU took the game, 26-24.
UC Irvine fought back in the third set and after three early ties, jumped ahead 9-5 as the Beach called a timeout. The Anteaters held the lead the rest of the set as they led by as many as nine several times. However, Long Beach State refused to quit. The Beach scored four-straight points as UCI called a timeout leading, 20-15. From there, LBSU whittled the Anteaters' lead down to two (24-22) on a block by Jaida Harris and Bacon. However, the Beach's rally was cut short as UC Irvine went on to win 25-22.
Long Beach State controlled the fourth set as the Beach forced Irvine into a negative attack percentage (-.083). LBSU used a 4-0 run to break a 1-1 tie and take a 5-1 advantage over the Anteaters. From that point, the Beach led the remainder of the set. UCI utilized both timeouts after finding themselves down 15-10 and 20-16. The Anteaters cut the Beach's lead down to one (20-19), but that was as close as they would come as Long Beach State won, 25-21.
Kendra MacDonald was UC Irvine's leading scorer with 10 kills on a .241 clip. She added 10 digs for a double-double. Setter Nicole Feliciano also recorded a double-double with 36 assists and 12 digs, while adding two kills, one block, and one ace.
The Beach look to extend their winning streak to four on Tuesday, Nov. 12 when they face UC San Diego at 7 p.m. at the Walter Pyramid.
