LONG BEACH, Calif. – In the penultimate weekend of the regular season, Long Beach State defeated UC San Diego, 3-1 [25-20, 25-20, 20-25, 25-14], on Tuesday night at the Walter Pyramid.

The pivotal match saw the Beach (16-9, 10-5 Big West) coming into the contest one game behind the Tritons (16-10, 10-5 Big West) in the conference standings. With the win, Long Beach State moves into fourth place in the league standings, while UCSD drop to fifth, as the Beach own the tiebreaker over the Tritons.

The Beach saw the return of senior setter Zayna Meyer, who had missed the last three matches due to an injury. Joining Meyer on the court as LBSU ran a 6-2 offense was senior setter Maura Hayes. The duo combined for 41 of Long Beach State's 47 assists with Meyer dishing out 23 and Hayes registering 18. The pair also added on the defensive end with Meyer logging seven digs and Hayes adding four.

Meyer and Hayes did a good job distributing the ball as they got three hitters in double-figures, and five to record six or more kills. Leading the offensive attack was freshman opposite Madi Maxwell who finished the match with 11 kills, while also contributing eight digs, three aces, and one block assist.

Also recording double-digit kills were senior outside hitters Abby Karich and Natalie Glenn who each recorded 10. Karich concluded the contest with a double-double as she also collected 11 digs to go along with three blocks, three assists, and one ace. Glenn also had a solid showing with six digs and two blocks.

The LBSU defense put up 10.0 total team blocks as sophomore middle blocker Ella Lomigora posted a team-leading six blocks with one solo stop. Senior middle Kameron Bacon added three blocks of her own to go along with six kills on a .556 clip (6-1-9).

The match started out with a close opening set. After 10 early ties, the Beach got a kill from Bacon followed by an ace from Maxwell to put the hosts up 15-13 at the media timeout. Freshman Grace O'Reilly knocked down back-to-back kills to give Long Beach a 17-14 lead as UCSD called for a timeout. The Tritons utilized their final timeout after a kill from Glenn gave the Beach a 19-16 advantage. Despite UC San Diego cutting LBSU's lead down to one (19-18), Long Beach State got several key plays from Maxwell who helped the Beach win the first set, 25-20.

After UC San Diego opened the second set on a 3-0 run, Long Beach State countered with five-straight points highlighted by a pair of kills and an ace by Lomigora to give the Beach a 7-4 edge. The Tritons used two short runs to go up 11-9 on LBSU. The Beach took a timeout to regroup and regained their lead, 17-16, after kills from Glenn and Maxwell. After another tie (18-18), Bacon broke through with a kill that sparked a 4-0 LBSU run as the Beach took control, 22-18, before winning 25-20 on a kill from Glenn.

UC San Diego took a quick 8-2 lead over Long Beach State after the Tritons went on a 7-0 scoring run early in the set. UCSD extended its lead to double digits (15-5) and led by as many as 12 (18-6) as the Tritons controlled the frame. Despite the deficit, Long Beach State chipped away at UC San Diego's lead cutting it all the way down to four (24-20), before dropping a 25-20 contest.

Long Beach State and UC San Diego battled each other through four early ties, but the Beach quickly jumped out in front, 9-6, after scoring four-consecutive points. LBSU extended its lead to seven (17-10) as UCSD called for a timeout. The Tritons cut the Beach's lead down to five (19-14), but that was as close as they would come. Long Beach got another strong serving run from Maxwell who led them on a 6-0 run to close the game and match. In that stretch, Lomigora knocked down a kill and put up a solo block, while O'Reilly recorded back-to-back kills. A Maxwell ace sent the game to match point, and Lomigora and Jaida Harris closed it out with a block assist as Long Beach State collected its fourth-straight win with a 25-14 victory over UCSD.

Kylie Pries was UC San Diego's leading scorer as she finished with 14 kills on a .238 hitting percentage. Setter Audrey Hollis registered 37 assists, while, libero Paulina Baillie logged 13 digs, and Emily McDaniel posted four blocks to go along with nine kills and two aces.
