Long Beach State Women’s Tennis Competing In Finals In Both Singles, Doubles At UNLV Fall Tournament

Freshmen duo Cecilia Costa and Thea Jagare will play for the flight one doubles championship Sunday.
LAS VEGAS, Nev. – Long Beach State had multiple important wins and a few very close losses on Saturday as the UNLV Fall Tournament completed its second day.
After three wins in doubles on Friday, Long Beach State nearly went unbeaten for the second straight day. Cecilia Costa and Thea Jagare were 6-4 winners in the flight one semifinals against Mariana Zuita and Maya Inouye of Utah Tech to advance to the doubles championship, which was nearly against teammates Paulina Franco and Pamela Badillo. The pair were just barely edged by Coco Zhao and Cindy Hu of the host Rebels, falling 9-7 in a tiebreak in the other semi.
In the second flight, it was Diana De Simone and Daria Malaescu who prevailed in a thiller, winning by the same margin of 9-7 in a tiebreaker against Nikol Micheva and Kaho Oyama of UNLV to win 7-6.
In singles, Daria Malaescu won her second straight match in her return to competition after a brief break, impressing again in a 6-1, 6-3 win over Dylan Lolfie of Utah to move into the flight three finals.
Long Beach State won all three of their consolation matches of the day. Both Badillo and Jagare were winners in flight two, and instead of facing each other Sunday will swap opponents for Sunday. Badillo dropped Ana Sampere of Utah Tech 6-2, 6-2, while Jagare was a 7-5, 6-1 winner over Nutsa Tsintsadze, also from Utah Tech. Costa was also a winner in flight one consolation play, defeating Gonzaga's Norharn Hesham 6-1, 6-3.
Diana De Simone, competing in the flight one semifinals was knocked out of competing in the final in another close match, falling 7-6, 6-4 to Emily Roberts of Gonzaga. Daisy Carpenter fell to 1-1 in the flight four round robin, and Franco was defeated in the other flight three semifinal by Kaho Oyama of UNLV.
The final day's action will once again start at 10 a.m., with singles and doubles competition for the full team.
