Beach earns first win over Rainbow Wahine since 2018-19, will face top-seeded UC Santa Barbara at 10am
SAN DIEGO, Calif. -- Long Beach State delivered a breakthrough performance Thursday afternoon, shutting out Hawai'i 4-0 in the Big West Championship quarterfinals at the Barnes Tennis Center. The victory marks the Beach's first win over the Rainbow Wahine since the 2018-19 season and sends LBSU into the semifinals for a showdown with top-seeded UC Santa Barbara.
The Beach set the tone early by securing the doubles point with wins on courts one and three. Cecilia Costa and Paulina Franco opened with a 6-4 victory over Grete Gull and Sophie Rachor, while Daisy Carpenter and Diana De Simone matched that scoreline on court three to clinch the point for Long Beach State.
In singles, LBSU's depth proved decisive. Daria Malaescu was first off the court with a dominant 6-0, 6-3 win at the No. 6 position, extending the Beach lead to 2-0. Pamela Badillo followed with a composed straight-sets victory, 7-6 (8-6), 6-4, at No. 5 to push Long Beach State within one point of advancing.
Costa sealed the match at the top spot, bouncing back after dropping the opening set to defeat Gull 4-6, 6-3, 6-3. Her clinching win capped a strong all-around performance for the Beach, with three other singles matches left unfinished while LBSU held leads or remained in tight contests.
The sweep underscores Long Beach State's momentum at the right time, combining strong doubles execution with efficient singles play to neutralize Hawai'i before the match could extend deeper into the lineup.
With the win, the Beach advances to face No. 1 seed UC Santa Barbara in the Big West Championship semifinals, scheduled for 10am tomorrow.
