Beach Women’s Basketball Battles, But Falls On The Road At Toledo

Long Beach State boasts three double-figure scorers, while shooting a season-high 42.4% from the field
TOLEDO – The Long Beach State Women's Basketball team outscored Toledo 24-29 in the fourth quarter, but were unable to complete the comeback as the Beach suffered a 79-72 loss to the Rockers at John A. Savage Arena.
The Rockets (3-1) outshot the Beach (2-2) 52.8-percent to 42.4-percent from the field. Additionally, Toledo made 10 triples to LBSU's five, and held the advantage, 20-11, on assists. Long Beach State, however, outrebounded Toledo, 35-30.
In addition to shooting a season-high, Long Beach State had three players score in double figures. Senior guard Patricia Chung led the team with a season-best 17 points, while sophomore forward Jada Crawshaw added 16, and senior guard Savannah Tucker contributed 13.
Chung added five rebounds, while Crawshaw posted five boards as well. Tucker finished the game with three rebounds and three assists. Meanwhile, freshman guard JaQuoia Brown came off the bench to lead the Beach in rebounding with seven.
The Beach got off to a strong start opening the game on a 7-0 run highlighted by a three from Chung, which was sandwiched between a pair of buckets by Mykelle Richards. Long Beach State led Toledo by as many as nine points (12-3) in the first quarter. However, the Rockets countered as they closed the frame on a 13-3 run to take a 16-15 edge going into the second quarter.
The Rockets continued their run as they scored six-straight points to open the second quarter with a 22-15 advantage over the Beach. From there, Toledo led the rest of the way as Long Beach State trailed by five (34-29) at halftime.
Long Beach State came out for the second half and shot 44.4% from the field (8-18), but it was no match for Toledo's impressive 78.6 field goal percentage (11-14). The Rockets outscored the Beach, 26-19, in the frame and led by as many as 16 (60-44), before the Beach managed to cut their lead down to 12 (60-48) by the end of the quarter.
The final 10 minutes of action saw Long Beach State heat back up as the Beach outscored the Rockets 24-19. The Beach chipped away at the Rockets' lead as they got an eight-point performance from Tucker. Additionally, Chung and Crawshaw added five points each. LBSU managed to make it a two-possession game after a three from Chung with 8.4 seconds remaining made it 78-72. But that was as close as the Beach would come.
Toledo had four double-digit scorers led by Kendall Carruthers' 19-point effort. Nan Garcia (14 points), Cadence Dykstra (13 points), and Khera Goss rounded out the Rockets' double-figure performers. Goss and Garcia each led the team with five rebounds, while Dykstra dished out a team-leading seven assists.
Long Beach State will conclude its four-game road swing on Sunday, Nov. 24 at Michigan at 2 p.m. (ET) / 11 a.m. (PT).
