Long Beach State Flexes Depth In 3-2 Win Over League-Leading UC Davis

Madi Maxwell and Maura Hayes each recorded a double-double, while Ella Lomigora tied her career-high with 10 blocks
LONG BEACH, Calif. – Long Beach State turned in a gritty performance on Saturday afternoon as the Beach took down league-leading UC Davis, 3-2 [24-26, 25-19, 25-21, 21-25, 15-13] inside the Walter Pyramid.
The Beach (13-9, 7-5 Big West) were strong on both sides of the ball as they hit .311 and put up a season-high 21.0 blocks. LBSU's 21.0 blocks marked the most in a single match since 2016. UC Davis (14-7, 9-3 Big West) dropped its second-straight contest and is now 0-2 against Long Beach State this season.
Madi Maxwell and Maura Hayes made the most of their start against the Aggies as each recorded a double-double. Maxwell led the offensive attack with a career-high 17 kills to go along with 12 digs, seven blocks, one assist, and one ace in an all-around excellent performance for the rookie opposite.
Hayes earned the start at setter as Zayna Meyer was sidelined due to concussion protocol. She and Madi Collins ran a 6-2 offense for the Beach that saw Hayes lead the way with 29 assists and 11 digs for her first-collegiate double-double. She also served up a career-high four aces contributing to half of LBSU's eight service aces.
Collins came in off the bench and helped Hayes run an efficient offense as she distributed 22 assists, while chipping in three digs.
Also recording double-digit kills on the night were senior outside hitters Natalie Glenn (13 kills) and Abby Karich (12 kills). Glenn led the team with a .407 (13-2-27) clip, while adding four digs, four blocks, and two assists. Meanwhile, Karich hit .323 (12-2-31) on the night, with eight digs, three blocks, and two aces.
The Beach's stout blocking defense was led by sophomore middle Ella Lomigora who recorded her second 10-block performance of the season. Also contributing to the blocking effort was redshirt freshman opposite Grace O'Reilly who put up a career-best nine blocks to go along with eight kills and two digs. Senior middle blocker Kameron Bacon contributed eight blocks, while chipping in four kills and one assist.
The all-around team effort saw the Beach start the match hitting .375 in the first set. Despite out-hitting the Aggies, who hit .200, in the frame, Long Beach State came up just short in a close overtime game (26-24). LBSU took a five-point lead (20-15) after scoring six-straight points, but UC Davis stayed withing striking distance and cut the Beach's lead down to one (22-21). Following a timeout, the Aggies closed the opening set on a 3-0 run to win 26-24.
In the second set, Long Beach State hit .417 with 14 kills, while the LBSU defense held the Aggies to a .182 clip. Davis took an early 4-1 lead, but Hayes served up back-to-back aces to even the score at 8-all. The Beach block put up three-consecutive stops as Long Beach took a 13-11 edge over the Aggies. The Beach led the rest of the way and closed the frame on a 3-0 run thanks to kills from Lomigora and Karich to lead LBSU to a 25-19 victory.
The Beach blocking defense continued to shine into the third set as they held the Aggies to a .051 attack percentage. UC Davis led by as many as six (17-11), but Long Beach State chipped away and cut the Aggies' lead down to two (18-16). Savana Chacon came in and led LBSU on a 6-0 scoring run as the Beach came back to take a 23-20 lead over the Aggies. An O'Reilly kill gave the Beach set point (24-21) and Hayes closed it out with an ace as Long Beach State won, 25-21, to take a 2-1 lead over UC Davis.
UC Davis would not go away quietly. The Aggies came back in the fourth set and hit .441 with 18 kills. Despite hitting .333, Long Beach fell behind Davis, 9-4, after the Aggies went on a 6-0 run. The Beach found themselves down by five (21-16) after three-straight points from UC Davis but managed to cut the lead down to three (24-21). With the Beach threatening, the Aggies called a timeout to regroup and put the set away, 25-21, to force a fifth set.
The fifth set began close, but the Beach quickly took control. Long Beach State got back-to-back kills from Bacon and Maxwell, followed by an ace from Chacon to force a Davis timeout as LBSU led 5-3. The Beach tallied four-straight points through the side switch and held a 9-4 advantage as the Aggies utilized their final timeout. Coming out of the break in action, UC Davis scored four-straight points of its own to cut the Beach's lead down to one (11-10). Long Beach State went back up by three (14-11), sending the contest to match point on a UC Davis service error. The Aggies held the Beach off for two more points making it a one-point contest (14-13) once again. But Long Beach State closed the match with a kill from Glenn to give the Beach the victory.
UC Davis's Jade Light led all scorers with 20 kills on a .400 clip, while contributing 12 digs, three aces, and one solo block. Olivia Utterback added 14 kills, and Reese Diersbock chipped in 10. Setter Mia Starr concluded the match with a double-double (55 assists, 10 digs), while adding a pair of aces, two blocks, and a kill. Libero Julia Ng anchored the backrow with 16 digs.
Long Beach State will be back in action on Friday, Nov. 8 against Cal State Fullerton. First serve is set for 6 p.m. at Titan Gym. The match will be broadcast live on ESPN+.
