SACRAMENTO – The game came down to the final 30 seconds as Long Beach State pulled out a thrilling 69-68 victory over Sacramento State on Sunday afternoon at the Nest. The Beach were led by a career-high 29-point performance from senior guard Savannah Tucker.
Tucker saw action in all 40 minutes for the Beach (2-1) as she connected on 9-of-15 field goals for 60% shooting from the field, while draining a pair of threes, to go along with nine made free throws. The Fresno, Calif., native also added seven rebounds, a team-leading five assists, and four steals.
The Hornets (4-1) suffered their first loss of the season despite getting three double-figure performances and a 20-point showing from Lina Falk.
Despite trailing Sac State at the end of each quarter, Long Beach State rallied to shoot 50% from the field (7-for-14) in the fourth quarter on their way to outscoring the Hornets, 20-15, in the frame.
The two teams got off to a slow start as neither team shot higher than 26.7% from the field in the opening 10 minutes of action. The Hornets used a 10-2 to jump ahead of the Beach (11-5) by 2:16. However the Beach cut Sac State's lead down to three (15-12) at the end of the quarter thanks to Tucker, who scored five points in the final 95 seconds of the frame.
The Hornets led Long Beach by as many as nine (28-19) with 3:16 on the clock in the second quarter. However, Long Beach State got a triple from Patricia Chung followed by a pair of made free throws from Judit Oliva Fernandez to cut Sac State's lead down to four (28-24) with 2:31 remaining. In the final 22.1 seconds of the period, Mykelle Richards completes the three-point play to send the Beach into halftime down by just one (32-31) to Sacramento State.
Coming out of the locker room for the second half, Long Beach State went on an 8-0 run to take a 41-40 edge over the Hornets with 5:55 on the clock. However, Sac State would counter going on their own run (8-2) to regain the lead, 48-43, with 4:27 left to go. From there, Sacramento State led the remainder of the quarter as the Beach found themselves down, 53-49, going into the final 10 minutes of regulation.
The fourth quarter saw the Hornets lead by as many as nine (62-53) by 7:22. But Long Beach State refused to quit. The Beach battled back as Tucker led the squad as she hit a three at 5:26 to bring LBSU within four (64-60). That triple kicked off a 9-0 Long Beach State run that gave the Beach a 66-64 advantage over the Hornets with 2:11 remaining. After the Hornets took a 68-66 lead with 36 ticks left on the clock, Jada Crawshaw went to the line and made both free throws to even the score at 68-all. Tucker was fouled with 0.8 seconds. She went to the line and sunk 1-of-2 free throws to give Long Beach State its final lead of the game, 69-68. That score would hold, despite a foul at 0.2 seconds that would have Sac State inbounding the ball under their basket.
Tucker led a trio of double-figure scorers as Richards finished the game with 13 points and Chung added 10. Oliva Fernandez just missed a double-double with nine points and nine rebounds.
In addition to Falk's double-figure showing, the Hornets also go strong performances from Sofia Alonso (17 points), Jaydia Martin (11 points), and Benthe Versteeg (11 rebounds, 7 assists).
