Long Beach State Wraps Beach Tennis Fall Invitational With Final Day Sunday

A trio of freshmen, Pamela Badillo, Cecilia Costa and Diana De Simone all finished the weekend with at least three wins in singles.

LONG BEACH, Calif. – A thrilling opening weekend came to a close Sunday as the wall-to-wall action featuring 9 Big West programs at the Beach Tennis Fall Invitational wrapped up with the final day of action.
 
                "I'm very pleased with the weekend, as our six freshmen performed well in their first college tournament," said head coach Jenny Hilt-Costello. "Particularly, I'd like to recognize Ceclia and Pamela for their efforts on Thursday and Friday, Each played just about 12 hours of tennis over those two days to reach the main draw quarterfinals in singles.                 
 
                Long Beach State closed out the weekend with a 29-13 overall record in singles as all seven players were in action in singles Sunday.
 
                Cecilia Costa and Pamela Badillo, who each reached the quarterfinals of the main draw before taking Saturday off, each returned to singles action with a win. Costa was a straight set winner of Carla Pacot of UC Santa Barbara 6-4, 6-4, while Badillo loat a pair of tiebreakers in a very tight match 7-6, 7-6, against Carrington Hayes of Cal State Fullerton.
 
                Diana De Simone, another freshman, also finished the weekend 4-1 with another win Sunday, a dominant 6-0, 6-2 win over Varsha Jawadi of UC San Diego. Daisy Carpenter completed Long Beach State's singles wins on Sunday with a 6-4, 6-4 win over Anushree Shekhera of Cal Poly.
 
                The Beach dropped two close matches in ten-point tiebreakers, as Thea Jagare lost 4-6, 6-2, 10-8 to Seha Yu of Cal State Fullerton while Joelle Lanz of Hawai'i defeated Paulina Franco Martinessi 2-6, 6-1, 11-9. Carolyna Fowler of UC Irvine defeated Daria Malaescu 6-2, 6-1 in the team's seventh singles match of the day.
 
                In doubles, the Beach had a pair of wins and one close defeat. Franco and Costa defeated Yu/Gevorgyan 6-2 and Jagare/Badillo defeated Lanz/Berl of Hawai'i 6-4. De Simone and Carpenter were only topped via tiebreaker as Bates/Shekhera of Cal Poly outlasted the freshmen pair 7-6.
 
                Myoung/Nikitash of Cal State Fullerton closed out the doubles main draw with an 8-4 victory on Sunday, while top seed Julia Haynes of UC San Diego went the distance with a 6-4, 6-2 championship match victory in the finals draw.
 
                The fall season continues for Long Beach State on October 17 with the start of the ITA Southwest Regionals.
