All six competing LBSU players will be in action Friday as well.
SAN DIEGO, Calif. – Freshman Diana De Simone had a very impressive day to begin the ITA Southwest Regionals, picking up a pair of singles wins to advance to the main draw where she'll join teammate Cecelia Costa. All six LBSU competitors return to action tomorrow as play from San Diego continues.
De Simone started the day with a straight sets win over Katarina Vayser of UC Santa Barbara. De Simone grabbed a 6-3 victory in the first set before holding off Vayser in a 7-6 tiebreaker, winning 7-2 to move on to the next round of the competition.
Facing an opponent who received a first-round bye in Allaire Berl of Hawai'i, De Simone was unfazed in a dominant performance, winning 6-2, 6-0 over Berl to move on to the next round.
After falling in the opening set 6-3 against Carrington Hayes of Cal State Fullerton, Thea Jagare bounced back with a 6-2 set two victory, but lost the decisive third to end her singles run at the ITAs. Long Beach State's other singles competitors fell in their opening matches. Sheena Masuda of Hawai'i defeated Paulina Franco Martinessi 6-2, 6-1; Pamela Badillo lost 6-3, 6-1 to Zoe Olmos of San Diego State and Daisy Carpenter was defeated by the same margin by Alexandra Ozarets of Cal Poly.
All six Long Beach State student-athletes who made the trip down to San Diego will be in action in doubles in the Round of 64 on Friday. All three pairs will start the day at USD, with matches starting at 9 a.m.
Jagare and Badillo will take on Pepperdine's Liam Oved and Alexia Harmon at 9 a.m., and Cecilia Costa and Franco Martinessi will play a Big West duo in Julia Haynes and Naomi Nguyen of UC San Diego. De Simone and Carpenter will play Teja Tirunelveli and Danielle Tuhten of Arizona in the third doubles match of the morning for LBSU.
Freshman Cecilia Costa earned a bye through the qualifying rounds but will open up her singles competition with a tough test against the second overall seed of the tournament, Ameila Honer of UC Santa Barbara. That match is scheduled to begin at 10 a.m. from USD after the conclusion of the first round of doubles matches.
