Costa, Franco Martinessi Advance At ITA Southwest Regionals

The Beach duo advanced to the Round of 32 in doubles.
SAN DIEGO, Calif. – Long Beach State's doubles pair of Cecilia Costa and Paulina Franco Martinessi defeated UC San Diego's Julia Haynes and Naomi Nguyen to advance to Saturday's action at the ITA Southwest Regionals in San Diego.
Doubles action kicked off the day, and Costa/Franco were 8-5 winners over the Triton duo, advancing to the Round of 32 Saturday where they will face Tandi Narendran and Midori Castillo of Arizona. The main draw doubles matches are scheduled to open Saturday's competition at 9 a.m.
Another Wildcat pair eliminated Diana De Simone and Daisy Carpenter, as Teja Tirunelveli and Danielle Tuhten of Arizona were 8-3 winners over the freshman duo. Thea Jagare and Pamela Badillo were also eliminated from the main draw in the Round of 64 by Liam Oved and Alexia Harmon of Pepperdine.
In singles, Long Beach State was matched up with seeded opposition in both of their main draw matches. Diana De Simone, who won two qualifying matches Thursday to reach the main draw, pushed sixth seed Emilija Tverijonaite of Arizona State to the limit in a three-set defeat 4-6, 6-1, 6-3. Costa was matched up with second seed Amelia Honer who won 6-2, 6-1.
The Beach had four extra matches on Friday as well. Pamela Badillo was a straight sets winner over Naomi Nguyen, 6-3, 6-3, while Franco Martinessi won by default against Polina Jorniak, also from the Tritons. Thea Jagare bounced back from a first set defeat in impressive fashion in a 3-6, 6-0, 10-4 win over Cincy Chen of UC San Diego, while Emma Tutoveanu of UC Santa Barbara won 6-1, 6-2, against Daisy Carpenter.
In addition to the main draw doubles competition of Costa and Franco Martinessi, Long Beach State will play two extra doubles matches as well as another round of extra singles competition as play continues from San Diego on Saturday.
