All four LBSU singles contenders were knocked out by seeded players Friday.
LONG BEACH, Calif. – Freshmen Pamela Badillo and Cecilia Costa each won their first match to advance into the quarterfinals, reaching the final eight out of the 64 competitors battling to start the season at the Beach Tennis Fall Invitational.

Eight entrants in both singles and doubles were seeded for the main draw, and all five of Long Beach State's remaining main draw entries were ultimately knocked out by those top players.
Freshman Cecilia Costa impressed in her action. Starting the day in the Round of 16, Costa was matched up against fifth-seeded Mika Ikemori of UC Davis and battled to a 6-4, 4-6, 6-4 win over the Aggies sophomore to advance to the quarterfinals. Putting up another big fight, Costa was only eliminated after three sets against Sein Myoung of Cal State Fullerton, as the fourth-seeded singles player outlasted the LBSU freshman in a third-set tiebreaker to win 6-2, 5-7, 7-6 in a thrilling match.
Pamela Badillo also reached the quarterfinals, defeating Daisy Manupau UC Davis 7-6 (5), 6-2 before falling to the tournament's third seed, Raphaelle Leroux of UC Santa Barbara.
Diana De Simone looked to continue her strong play from a day ago and opened her match against Peyton Dunkle with a 6-3 first set win, but Dunkle recovered to grab the victory for Cal Poly. Thea Jagare was matched up with the tournament's top seed, UC San Diego's Julia Haynes who won 6-1, 6-4.
In doubles, fourth-seed Seha Yu and Milena Gevorgyan of Cal State Fullerton defeated Diana De Simone and Daisy Carpenter 8-4 to end the Beach's main draw run there.
In extra matches, Long Beach State's trio eliminated Thursday from Main Draw action all grabbed victories. Daria Malaescu defeated Kelly Leung of UC San Diego 7-5, 6-2 while junior Paulina Franco Martinessi also won in straight sets, 6-1, 6-4 over Penelope Wong of UC Davis. Freshman Daisy Carpenter battled back from a first set loss, winning the second set 7-5 and dominating a ten-point tiebreaker 10-2 to close out a 3-0 day for LBSU in extra singles.
The Beach split two extra doubles matches, as Costa and Franco Martinessi defeated Youssef/Sappa of UC Davis 6-2, while Lian/Nguyen of UC San Diego won 6-1 against Jagare and Badillo.
Two rounds of doubles play are scheduled for Saturday, as the quarterfinals and semifinals will set up Sunday's championship match in the main draw, while the semifinals will be held in the singles main draw.
There will also be plenty of extra matches held Saturday as all 12 courts of the Rhodes Tennis Center will continue to be in action, including Long Beach State who will look to continue their excellent record in the set up matches.
