Beach Tennis Sends Four Through To Round Of 16 Singles In Season Opener

Over half of the Long Beach State team still in singles contention in the main draw at the Beach Tennis Fall Tournament.
LONG BEACH, Calif. – Hosting all but one Big West program to kick off the season at the Rhodes Tennis Center, Long Beach State had four freshmen advance from the Round of 64 to the Round of 16 in the first day of action at the Beach Tennis Fall Tournament.
Competition on Thursday only featured action from the Main Draw, as the first round of doubles was played while two rounds of singles were completed in a busy but thrilling day from the Rhodes Tennis Center.
"We had a lot of strong performances today, and I thought it was a very good start to our season," said Long Beach State Head Coach Jenny Hilt-Costello. "I'm excited to continue building in our matches tomorrow."

In the singles main draw of 64, Long Beach State had four players, all incoming freshmen, who won two singles matches to advance through to the Round of 16.
Pamela Badillo had a dominant start to her career in a 6-0, 6-0 win over Athena Wardy of UC San Diego, and followed that up with a 6-4, 7-5 win over Yuliia Zhytelna of CSUN to proceed in the main draw. Thea Jagare had a similar day, cruising 6-1, 6-1 in her first match against Kaia Wolfe before recovering well after a tough first set to defeat Victoria Santibanez of CSUN 1-6, 6-3, 6-1.
Diana De Simone won both of her matches in straight sets in an impressive debut, dropping CSUN's Sydney Wilson 6-4, 6-2 before an even cleaner match in the Round of 32, defeating Emma Tutoveanu 6-1, 6-3. Cecilia Costa was Long Beach State's other player to advance to the Round of 16, also taking both of her matches in straight sets. Costa defeated Diana Yanotosyskaya of Cal State Fullerton 6-3, 6-2 before prevailing 7-5, 6-4 over CSUN's Angela Ho.
Daisy Carpenter won her first set against Carolyna Fowler of UC Irvine but fell in three sets. Daria Malaescu battled but ultimately lost also in three sets, winning a second set tiebreaker in a 7-5, 6-7, 6-3 setback. Finally, seventh-seeded Tyra Richardson of UCSB defeated Paulina Franco Martinessi 6-2, 6-2.
De Simone's strong day continued in doubles as the freshman paired with Carpenter and the two defeated Mikael Hinton and Haily Huynh of UC Irvine, 8-3. Badillo/Jagare lost a tiebreaker to Cal State Fullerton's Taylor/Yanotoyskaya 8-7, while Leung/Jorniak held off Costa/Franco 8-5.
De Simone and Carpenter will open the day for Long Beach State in the doubles Round of 16 at 9 a.m., and then the quartet of Beach freshman will play their Round of 16 matches immediately following beginning at 10:15 a.m.
Singles quarterfinal matches are also scheduled for Friday afternoon, while extra singles and doubles matches featuring players knocked out from the main draw will also be held throughout the day.
Admission is free at the Rhodes Tennis Center and fans are encouraged to attend.
