Long Beach State Closes Time In San Diego With Extra Matches

All six players had a singles and doubles match Sunday to finish the ITA Southwest Regional.
SAN DIEGO, Calif. – Long Beach State played a full round of extra matches in their final day in San Diego, playing six singles and three doubles matches to finish their trip to the ITA Southwest Regional.
Long Beach State picked up two wins and had two close super tiebreak losses in a strong day of singles. Thea Jagare and Diana De Simone each faced Big West competition and came away with a pair of wins. Jagare was a 7-5, 6-2 winner over Allaire Berl of Hawai'i, while De Simone cruised to a 6-1 first set win before grabbing a second set tiebreak.
In two very close matches, Paulina Franco Martinessi won a first set over Victoria Santibanez of CSUN, but dropped the second before a competitive tiebreaker in a 4-6, 6-3, 12-10 result. Pamela Badillo's match with UC Santa Barbara's Ali Benedetto also went to a super tiebreak, which Benedetto held on to win 6-4, 2-6, 11-9.
Cecilia Costa faced Jana Hossam Salah of USC and lost 6-2, 6-2, while Arizona's Danielle Tuhten won 6-1, 6-1 over Daisy Carpenter.
The Beach also competed in an extra round of doubles, but lost all three matches. Taylor Goetz and Duru Soke of Pepperdine were 6-2 winners against Jagare and Badillo, Arizona State's Aiya Nupbay and Patricija Spaka won 6-3 over Costa and Franco Martinessi, and De Simone and Carpenter were defeated 6-3 by Jo-Yee Chan and Charlotte Roesch of the co-hosts San Diego State.
Long Beach State will have a brief break before closing out the fall schedule at the UNLV Fall Tournament in Las Vegas November 8-10.
