Long Beach State was led by Casey Valenti Paea’s 11 points and 10 rebounds for her first career double-double in loss at UCR
RIVERSIDE, Calif. – Casey Valenti Paea recorded her first career double-double, but 35 Long Beach State turnovers were too much to overcome as the Beach dropped a 49-43 road contest to UC Riverside on Saturday at the SRC Arena.
The Beach (6-8, 1-3 Big West) started out slow scoring just three points, all off of free throws, in the opening frame as the Highlanders (6-8, 1-3 Big West) took an early lead. Long Beach State chipped away and took its first lead of the game in the third quarter, and led by as many as seven (37-30) in the fourth quarter, but came up short.
Despite out-shooting UC Riverside, 36.7 percent to 22.7 percent, LBSU committed 35 turnovers in the game and UCR capitalized scoring 21 points off of turnovers. The Beach also out-rebounded the Highlanders, 52-33, marking their first 50-plus rebound game since 2018. Long Beach also held the advantage in assists (14-8) and blocks (5-3), however, Riverside led the way 22 steals to the Beach's 8.
Valenti Paea led the Beach with 11 points and 10 rebounds for her first career double-double. She also set the standard for Long Beach State with five assists and three steals.
Cheyenne Givens finished the game with 10 points and eight boards, while also chipping in three assists and one steal.
Jada Crawshaw led the Beach with three blocks, while also contributing eight rebounds, two points, and two assists in the game.
Both teams got off to a slow start offensively as neither team shot over 25.0 percent from the field in the first quarter. Long Beach State went 0-for-7 from the floor and was limited to just three points, all scored from the charity stripe. However, the Highlanders took a 20-15 lead into the locker room at halftime thanks in part to LBSU's tough first quarter.

LBSU seemed to find its groove offensively as the Beach connected on 7-of-16 field goals for a 43.8 shooting percentage.
