The Teams Battled In A Defensive Struggle
LONG BEACH, Calif.— UC San Diego defeated Long Beach State 45-30 in Big West Women's Basketball action Thursday night at the Walter Pyramid.
In a defensive struggle, the Tritons led 20-18 at halftime. Neither team scored for the first three minutes of the third quarter until a Cheyenne Givens three-pointer put the Beach up 21-20. A little over a minute later, Erin Condron's putback of a Denali Pinto basket sent UC San Diego ahead by a point. LBSU's Savannah Tucker and UCSD's Gracie Gallegos exchanged field goals before Condron's jumper in the paint increased the advantage to three. Sydney Woodley's second chance field goal in the paint with just over two minutes to go in the period made it a 26-25 game. Pinto responded with a jumper on the ensuing UCSD possession. After being fouled on the next LBSU possession, Tucker connected on free throws to cut the lead to 28-26. A Gallegos layup followed Izzy Forsyth's three-pointer, creating a 33-26 score. Patricia Chung's jumper sent the teams into the fourth quarter with a 33-28 score.
The Tritons did not allow a Long Beach State field goal in the fourth quarter (0-13). UC San Diego shut out the Beach until 11.7 seconds remained in the frame when Chung made two free throws. UCSD outscored LBSU 12-2 in the frame. Katie Sprigs paced UC San Diego (7-8, 3-1 Big West) with 12 points and nine rebounds. Lovely Sonnier led Long Beach State with eight points. Jada Crawshaw posted a team-high eight rebounds for LBSU. The teams combined for 54 turnovers (29 for Long Beach State, 25 for UCSD). The Beach recorded 16 steals, while UCSD had 12. The Tritons held the Beach to 21.1% shooting (11-for-51). LBSU limited UC San Diego to 32.7% (18-for-55) from the field. UCSD outrebounded LBSU 40-35
