LONG BEACH, Calif. – Long Beach State turned in a strong performance on Saturday afternoon as the Beach battled conference foe UC Santa Barbara at the Walter Pyramid. However, LBSU came up short as the Beach dropped a 69-56 contest to the Gauchos.

Long Beach State (6-10, 1-5 Big West) played a solid game shooting 38.9 percent from the field, while grabbing 32 rebounds, and out-blocking the Gauchos (11-5, 5-1 Big West), 7-2. However, UC Santa Barbara used a strong fourth quarter to win their sixth of their last seven games.

The Beach got a 14-point showing from Casey Valenti-Paea, while Patricia Chung added 12 points on the offensive end. Chung also led LBSU in rebounding with seven boards, while adding three assists, and two steals.

Cheyenne Givens dished out four assists to go along with four points giving her 601 career points in her Division I career.

Meanwhile, Lovely Sonnier led the Beach with three blocks to go along with as many points and a trio of rebounds.

UC Santa Barbara started the game with a quick five points, but the Beach got on the board at 8:38 after a three from Valenti-Paea. Long Beach kept the game close in the first quarter and closed the frame on a 7-2 run as Chung hit a jumper with seven seconds left to give LBSU a 15-14 lead at the end of the quarter.

The Gauchos had a strong second quarter as they outscored the Beach, 22-7. UCSB went on a 17-0 run in the frame to break the game open and take a 34-17 lead over LBSU with 3:33 on the clock. Savannah Tucker made a jumper at 2:18 to end the scoring drought, but the Beach went into the locker room at halftime trailing, 36-22.

Following the break in action, Long Beach State came out refreshed and opened the third with back-to-back threes from Sydney Woodley and Jada Crawshaw, which cut the Gauchos' lead down to 10 (38-28) at 7:33. Chung made it a single-digit deficit (40-31) after sinking the and-1 at 5:59. The Beach went on their largest run of the game (8-0) to cut the Gauchos' lead down to three (42-39) at 2:48 on a jumper from Chung. Long Beach State would outscore UCSB 21-10 in the frame to trail by just three (46-43) heading into the fourth quarter.

The Beach continued their strong showing as they took a 52-51 lead at 6:03 on a driving layup from Tucker. However, UC Santa Barbara would go on a 10-0 run to take a 61-52 advantage with just 51 seconds remaining in the game. Despite Long Beach State's efforts, the Beach were unable to regain the lead as they eventually fell, 69-56, to drop their fourth-straight contest.

UCSB was led by Alyssa Marin who scored a game-high 25 points. Alexis Whitfield finished the game one rebound shy of a double-double (13 points, 9 boards), and Anya Choice closed the game with 11 points to round out the double-figure scorers for the Gauchos. Skyler Burke led the way with six assists, while Choice added three steals, and Whitfield accounted for both of the Gauchos' blocks.

Long Beach State will travel to Hawaii to take on the Rainbow Wahine on Thursday, January 18 at 9 p.m. (PT)/7 p.m. (HT). The game will be broadcast live on ESPN+.
