
Depth Shines For Cross Country As Women Take Second At UCR Invitational

Long Beach State’s women were second among 18 teams Saturday.
RIVERSIDE, Calif. – At the second event of the year for the cross country teams, Long Beach State's women's program had an outstanding finish, placing second among 18 teams at the UC Riverside Invitational.
Women's 6K | Men's 8K
Junior Allie Scimia was again the top finisher for Long Beach State, crossing the line with a time of 20:36.0 to place 12th overall among the 172 runners competing in the 6K. Utah Valley ended as the clear winners, but Long Beach State took second overall with 103 points on the day as the other runners for the Beach had strong days.
Sophomore Leia Jones finished in the Top 20 with a time of 21:02.6, a new PR, and Louise Stonham was just behind in 23rd at 21:04.6 setting a new best for the freshman. Ailene Rios placed in 29th with a time of 21:15.6 and Maddie Franco closed the scoring for Long Beach State with a time of 21:26.7 in 36th overall. Marikay Schwab also had a PR with a time of 21:44.6 for the junior transfer.
On the men's side, Long Beach State finished ninth overall, though the team was second among the competing Big West schools in the event, just behind UC Irvine. Mario Tavares was again the top finisher for the Beach, as the Riverside City transfer smashed his previous PR by over 30 seconds with a time of 24:20.1 to take 29th among the 216 runners competing in the men's invitational.
Freshman Cameron Rhone was just behind in a time of 24:29.6, placing 37th and senior Quinn Garity was the third across the line for LBSU at 24:37.5. Another Riverside City transfer in Kyle Reden crossed the line in 24:52.2 for LBSU and Cameron Gill rounded out the scorers for the Beach with a time of 25:17.5.
Long Beach State will take nearly a month off from competition before returning the UCR Ag/Ops course to take part in the Highlander Invite on October 14.
