RIVERSIDE, Calif. – Allie Scimia, Louise Stonham and Leia Jones all finished in the overall Top 20 of 256 finishing runners as Long Beach State won the Highlander Invitational on Saturday morning.

Long Beach State's win came over 22 other programs, including three Big West opponents in Cal State Fullerton, UC San Diego and the hosts UC Riverside, as well as Arizona State, San Diego State, California Baptist and USC.

               Final Results

Junior Allie Scimia continued to lead from the front for the Beach, coming in seventh overall with a time of 20.36.9 in a consistent run from the UCR Invitational one month ago. True Freshman Louise Stonham was next, besting her previous best by 15 seconds with a time of 20:51.8, tallying 11 points in 15th overall. Leia Jones had 16 points with the third Top 20 finish seconds later at 20:55.5.

A model of consistency, Ailene Rios had an identical time on her second run through the UCR Ag/Ops course of 21:15.6 to come home fourth on the team, while Marikay Schwab also had a PR Saturday with a time of 21:18.7 to round of the scoring for Long Beach State.

Jenna Gallegos and sophomore Alyssa Tapanes also both set new personal bests on a memorable day for the program. As a freshman, Stonham's time moves up to 5th in the program's Top 10 while Jones' finish was good for 8th place in the Beach record books.

The win was the first for the program since the 2011 season, when Long Beach State claimed the Bronco Invitational title at Santa Clara behind program legend Rosa Del Toro.

The men's team also had a solid day at the UCR Ag/Ops Course. Long Beach State came in sixth place out of 26 teams as the host Highlanders took the team title.

Senior Quinn Garity led the way for Long Beach State, setting a new 8K PR with a time of 24.16.8 to take 20th place overall, a mark good for 8th in the Long Beach State Top 10. Junior Mario Tavares crossed just behind Garity at 24:22.8, 26th overall while bringing in 20 points.

Junior Cristian Martinez smashed his previous PR with a time of 24:46.1, bettering his previous best by nearly 90 seconds. Freshman Kyle Reden took fourth on the team with a time of 25:07.4 and Will Frankenfeld, in his first LBSU competition rounded out the scoring with a time of 25:30.1. Freshman Brandon Day set a new best as well by 25 seconds as the sixth runner to cross the line for the Beach.

After a break of a month before Saturday morning's competition in Riverside, Long Beach State hits the home stretch of the season. The Beach has a quick turnaround to compete on Friday, October 20 at the John Elders Titan Invitational before heading back to Blacklake Golf Course in Nipomo, Calif. for the Big West Championships on Friday, October 27.
