Track and Field Opens Competition at Steve Scott Invitational

Long Beach State is in Irvine for their final weekend before Big West Championships.
IRVINE, Calif. – Long Beach State began their final weekend of the regular season on Friday with day one of the Steve Scott Invitational.
Results
Rori Denness-Lamont was the biggest highlight of the day competing in women's Javelin. Posting an almost three-foot PR improvement, she won the event with a throw of 46.06m (151-1) among a field of 22 athletes. The mark ranks as the ninth best in LBSU history.
Also in the Javelin was a new PR from Natasha Tehrani. With a throw of 36.61m (120-1), she improved on her lifetime best by nine and a half feet for a sixth-place finish.
Hailey Fune also turned in a career day in women's Long Jump, launching herself 5.85m (19-2.5) for a fourth place finish. The jump is just shy of five inches better than her previous personal best. DeSousa (18-7.25) and Millard (18-6.5) also competed, posting top ten finishes in the field of 28.
Keeley Rasmussen had a season-best effort in the women's Hammer on Friday. Her mark of 53.79m (176-5) beat her previous season best by 11 inches and was good for a third place finish of the 20 competitors.
Out on the track, Tessa Chen had the run of her life. Competing in the 3000m Steeplechase, she posted a time of 11:31.38 for a 19-second PR improvement.
On the men's side, the throwing pair of Pablo Gamez and Sebastian Coleman had a great day in the Hammer Throw. Gamez posted a throw of 61.73 (202-6) while Coleman went 61.12 (200-6) to finish second and third respectively.
In the Long Jump, Elijah Harris led a group of seven LBSU competitors, posting a mark of 7.37m (24-2.25). It is a 2.5 inch PR improvement and put him in third place in a group of 28 jumpers. Novye James (23-5.25), Miguel Orozco (23-1.25), and DeQuan Guillebeau (22-8.5) all finished top ten.
On the track, Michael Phillips had a great run in the men's Mile. With a time of 4:03.15, the senior finished second overall in a field of 44 runners. Quinn Garity turned in a new PR in the men's 5000m, crossing the line 14:35.69. It is a 10 second season improvement and just edges his previous lifetime best set at CSUN. Mario Tavares also ran in the 5k, the first at LBSU, posting a lifetime best 14:41.59 for a top ten finish.
Long Beach State will close out the regular season tomorrow with day two of the Steve Scott Invitational. The field events will begin at noon while the sprints, relays, and hurdles start at 12:30 p.m.
