Historic Night For Lassina Traore Not Enough As Long Beach State Loses In Double Overtime At UC Davis

Sophomore Lassina Traore became the first player in 40 years to have a 20/20 game in the loss.
DAVIS, Calif. – In a wild roller coaster of a game, Long Beach State had an iconic performance from Lassina Traore with 22 points and 20 rebounds, but UC Davis took the final regular season game 93-92 in double overtime.
Traore tied TJ Robinson for the Long Beach State single-season record with 17 double-doubles on the year, and became the first player since Michael Zeno in the 1982-83 season with a 20/20 game for Long Beach State.
Both teams had a massive comeback in the game, as UC Davis (18-13, 11-8 Big West) led Long Beach State (17-15, 11-9 Big West) at halftime by 10, 39-29. The Aggies would continue to lead even to 10 minutes remaining in regulation, on top 50-43 before the chaos began.
Locking down defensively, Long Beach State roared back into the contest, going on an 18-2 run and holding UC Davis without a field goal for nearly eight minutes of outstanding defense. That run helped the Beach take an 11-point lead. The Aggies were able to rally, taking advantage of seven free throws in the final minute to even the score in regulation at 73-73.
Tobias Rotegaard hit a pair of 3-pointers in the first overtime, and an Aboubacar Traore putback put the Beach in front 81-77 with under a minute remaining. Long Beach State looked to have come close to securing the win as a 3-pointer from Kane Milling airballed, but the untouched Milling received three free throws to help extend the game once more.
In the second overtime, trailing by one with under 30 seconds remaining, Lassina Traore put the exclamation point on a huge day with a steal and dunk to put the Beach up by one. Pepper went to the line one final time to put the Aggies up once more, and the Beach found Amari Stroud for a good opportunity in the paint that hit front iron, allowing UC Davis to escape with the win in an instant classic.
UC Davis finished 33-of-40 from the free throw line to help offset 56 points in the paint from Long Beach State in the regular season finale. The Aggies receive the sixth seed for the Big West Tournament courtesy of playing one fewer game than Long Beach State, a road contest at Cal State Fullerton.
As the No. 7 seed in the upcoming Big West Championship, Long Beach State will face No. 10 Cal Poly in the opening round at 8:30 p.m. on ESPN+ from the Dollar Loan Center in Henderson, Nev.
