The Beach knocked out after Cal Poly got going from outside.
HENDERSON, Nev. – A streaky Cal Poly team caught fire and shocked Long Beach State in the opening round of the Big West Championship on Sunday, pulling away from the Beach in the second half on the way to an 88-68 win.
Cal Poly (8-24) shot 50 percent from three on the night, going 11-of-22 from behind the arc and shot over 50 percent from the field as well, led by Brantly Stevenson who was the contest's high scorer with 28 points.
Long Beach State (17-16) found success going inside early, taking 21 free throws in the first half to take a 40-35 lead into the locker room at halftime. AJ George and Lassina Traore combined to go 12-for-14 from the line in the first half, and that strategy worked to give the Beach the lead.
Cal Poly scored seven straight points to open the second half to erase the Long Beach State lead, and after taking the lead, continued to hit 3-pointers to extend the lead or answer big LBSU shots. Stevenson hit a jumper to push the lead to 12 points, and forced to chase the game, Cal Poly would continue to extend their lead until the dying minutes.
Long Beach State finishes the 2022-23 season with an overall record of 17-16, and the team has only one guaranteed departure in Joel Murray. Among records of note, Lassina Traore finished the year tied with TJ Robinson for the school record with 17 double-doubles, and tied with Robinson for second in single-season rebounds with 347. Aboubacar Traore closed the year in the Top 15 in career rebounds at Long Beach State, while Jadon Jones ranks ninth in career 3-pointers made at the Beach.
