Long Launches Walkoff Home Run to Beat California Baptist

LONG BEACH, Calif. – In a tie game in the bottom of the ninth, Jonathon Long launched a ball deep to left for a walkoff home run. The victory extends the Dirtbags' (15-8) win streak to five consecutive games.
The home run was launched 109mph off the bat and a projected 419 feet into the trees beyond the left field wall. It is the fourth home run of the season for the junior putting him into a tie for the team-lead.
It was a bullpen day for the Dirtbag pitching staff starting with Grant Cherry. The sophomore transfer tossed 2.1 scoreless innings with a strikeout. He handed the ball to Jonathan Carlos to get out of a jam in the third. The right-hander would end up with a 1.2 scoreless innings on the mound. The third arm was Julian Orozco, tossing two scoreless innings of his own.
The offense got an early start as well plating two runs in the bottom of the second. The reigning Big West Player of the Week, Kyle Ashworth, sent an RBI single to left center for the first Dirtbag run of the night. Two batters later, Nick Marinconz sent a flyball to center for a sacrifice fly and the second run of the game.
California Baptist would break the shutout with a run in the top of the seventh and then tie it up in the eighth. Ethan Clough would come out of the bullpen and pick up his first strikeout of the night to strand a pair of runners and keep the game tied.
After a scoreless top of the ninth, the scene was set with a 2-2 ballgame and Long set to leadoff bottom nine. On the third pitch of the inning, he launched the walkoff home run and gave the Dirtbags the 3-2 victory.
The Dirtbags will take their five-game win streak into their first home conference series this weekend as Cal Poly comes to town for a three-game set.
