Osman Shines; Dirtbags Shutout South Florida in Game One

3/11/2023 9:47:00 PM | Baseball

Long Beach State had three pitchers combine for a two-hit shutout.

LONG BEACH, Calif. – The pitching staff dominated on Saturday night as Long Beach State took down South Florida, 8-0, in the series opener. A trio of Dirtbag arms combined for a two-hit shutout of the Bulls for their fifth win in six games.

Graham Osman was the main storyline tossing seven shutout innings, allowing just two hits and two walks, while striking out a career-high nine batters. It is the most punch outs in a single-game by a Long Beach State pitch so far this season.

From one southpaw to another, Sky Wells would throw a perfect eighth and Jonathan Carlos a perfect ninth to secure the two-hit shutout.

The first run of the ballgame came in the bottom of the first after a Nick Marinconz single and Rocco Peppi hit by pitch put two runners on for Jack Hammond. The sophomore right-hander sent a line drive into right-center plating Marinconz and putting the Dirtbags out front early.

The first half of the game flew by as Osman exchanged zeros with USF's Ethan Brown for the next three innings before the scoring resumed again in the bottom of the fifth.

With two runners aboard, Peppi would send his team-leading sixth double down the left field line to plate two more runs. He now owns a team-leading 17 RBI on the young season. He would eventually come in to score on a wild pitch and South Florida error to cap off a three-run inning for LBSU.

The 'Bags would plate another run in the sixth before rallying for three more in the bottom of the eighth to put them out in front, 8-0. Carlos would enter in the ninth and retire all three Bulls he faced to secure the series opening win.

In the box score, Marinconz, Peppi, Hammond, and Connor Burns all registered two-hit nights. Marinconz reached safely in four of his plate appearances with a pair of walks and a pair of singles to go along with two runs scored. Peppi and Burns also had two runs scored of their own as well.

Long Beach State and South Florida will matchup for a Sunday doubleheader beginning at 11 a.m. to close out the series. The second game of the double header will be streamed live on ESPN+.
