Long Beach State was three outs shy of a no-hitter in game one of the doubleheader.
LONG BEACH, Calif. – The Dirtbags split their doubleheader on Sunday, securing the series victory over South Florida. Game one was a near no-hitter with Long Beach State winning it 8-0 before falling in game two by the score of 6-2.
Long Beach State (9-5) has now won every weekend of their season to start the season with three series' victories to go along with the tournament win last weekend.
Game one was all about Nico Zeglin starting on the mound. The right-hander tossed seven shutout innings without allowing a hit. Only two Bulls hitters reached base, one via walk and one hit by pitch against him. He also struck out a career-high 13 batters, the most by a Dirtbag pitcher this season.
The offense gave Zeglin plenty of run support in the their first set of at-bats, plating six runs. Sending 11 hitters to the plate, the Dirtbags recorded five hits and three walks.
Nick Marinconz, Ty Borgogno, and Rocco Peppi reached safely to start the inning with the big hit coming from Jonathon Long. The junior first baseman sent a ball down the right field line for a two-RBI double. Connor Burns and Marinconz would also record RBI knocks later in the inning as the 'Bags jumped out to an early 6-0 lead.
After Zeglin's seven n-hit innings, Josh Haley took over on the mound looking to finish off the combined no-hitter. He retired the Bulls in order in the eighth putting the Dirtbags just three outs away from history.
Unfortunately, the first USF batter in the top of the ninth would sneak a single through the left side to break up the no-no. Haley would respond though and lock it down for a two-hit shutout.
The win also gave the Dirtbags' pitching staff 18 consecutive innings without allowing a run.
Looking to complete the sweep, Long Beach State had Myles Patton on the mound for the series finale. The left-hander would struggle surrendering five runs in two innings as the Bulls jumped out to a 6-0 lead after two innings.
Tyler White broke the shutout in the fifth inning with a line drive down the left field line and over the fence for his first career home run.
After a South Florida run came across in the top of the ninth, the Dirtbags attempted to rally in the bottom half. After a two out walk and single put two runners on, a throwing error from the USF pitcher brought in a run to make it 6-2. Marinconz would come to the plate next and hit a ball sharply to the left side, but a diving stop by the third baseman would retire him and end the ballgame.
Long Beach State is back in action on Tuesday, heading to California Baptist for a midweek matchup with the Lancers.
