Jada Crawshaw and Davai Matthews finished with career-highs in Long Beach State’s victory
LONG BEACH, Calif. – Long Beach State showcased its depth on Tuesday night as six players scored in double figures leading the Beach to an 81-79 victory over San Francisco at the Walter Pyramid.
The Beach (5-4) jumped out to an early 5-0 lead over the Dons (3-8) and held the lead throughout the game. Long Beach State led by as many as 19 points (50-31) in the game, but San Francisco made things interesting in the fourth quarter. The Dons chipped away at the Beach's lead and evened the score at 77-all with 3:25 remaining in regulation. However, Long Beach State remained composed and went up by four (81-77) after a steal from Savannah Tucker led to a layup by Davai Matthews to give the Beach the game.
Tucker led the Beach's half a dozen double-digit scorers with 17 points, while adding four rebounds, two steals, and one assist. Jada Crawshaw, Patricia Chung, and Casey Valenti Paea each tallied 12 points, while Sydney Woodley contributed 11, and Matthews rounded out the double-figure scorers with 10.
Crawshaw and Matthews each set a new career-high in points for themselves on the night. If that weren't enough, the duo also led the Beach in rebounding as Matthews posted eight, another career-best, and Crawshaw grabbed seven.
Everything was working for Matthews as she also led the Beach with five assists to set another career milestone for herself.
Woodley also contributed four assists to go along with four steals. Meanwhile, Chung added three assists and five boards in the Beach's win.
Long Beach State jumped out in front early and used a 7-0 run to take a 15-4 advantage over the Dons by 4:20 in the opening quarter. After a triple from Tucker at 2:49, the Beach held a commanding 20-6 lead. However, San Francisco's offense awoke and rattled off 10-consecutive points to close the gap (20-16) at the end of the frame.
The Beach pushed their lead back up to double digits (40-29) in the second quarter after a three from Crawshaw at 5:16. The Long Beach State offense was on fire in the second as the Beach shot 56.3 (9-16) percent from the field and outscored the Dons 30-17 in the quarter. Another trey from Tucker sparked a 10-0 LBSU run that gave the Beach a comfortable 50-33 halftime advantage. The Beach would drain eight of their nine total three-point field goals in the first half.
Long Beach State continued its hot shooting in the third quarter. The Beach connected on 7-of-13 field goals in the frame on their way to shooting 53.8 percent from the floor. LBSU held a steady lead throughout the quarter and held a 12-point lead (71-59) going into the fourth quarter.
San Francisco found their groove in the final 10 minutes of action. The Dons shot 46.7 (7-15) percent in the frame and outscored Long Beach 20-10. The Beach, meanwhile, made just 4-of-14 field goals and were 0-for-3 from long distance. The Dons went on their best run in the fourth, as they scored 11-straight points to whittle the Beach's lead down to three (73-70) by 7:14. San Francisco continued to chip away and knocked down a three from Jasmine Gayles with 3:25 on the clock to even the score at 77-all. Despite allowing the Dons back in the game, the Beach quickly regained the lead as Tucker was fouled and made both her free throws (79-77) with just over three minutes left. With 1:27 on the clock, Tucker picked up a key steal and Matthews laid it in to give the Beach an 81-77 edge with just 1:08 remaining. Debora Dos Santos brought the Dons within two (81-79) but missed the potential game-tying layup with just 3.3 seconds left. Chung grabbed the rebound and let the clock expire as the Beach earned their fifth win of the year.
Gayles led all scorers with 21 points, while Dos Santos finished with a double-double (15 points, 13 rebounds). Luana Leite also recorded double figures for San Francisco as she concluded the game with 18 points to go along with five boards, three assists, and three steals.
Long Beach State will be back in action on Thursday, Dec. 21 when the Beach host No. 6 USC in the final non-conference game of the year. Tip-off is set for 2 p.m. at the Walter Pyramid. The game will be broadcast live on ESPN+.
