The Beach close out non-conference action with an 85-77 loss to No. 6 USC as four LBSU players record double-figures

LONG BEACH, Calif. – Long Beach State welcomed No. 6 USC to the Walter Pyramid for a Thursday afternoon contest to close out the non-conference season and out-shot the Trojans 42.2 percent to 33.3 percent, before dropping a closely contested game, 85-77.

The 77 points scored by the Beach (5-5) marked the most points the Trojans (10-0) have allowed this season. Long Beach State boasted four double-figure scorers on the night and outrebounded USC 49-39 in the game.

Freshman forward Jada Crawshaw came off the bench for the Beach and led the way with her first collegiate double-double of the year. She tallied 12 points and 10 rebounds, a new career-high, while also adding one steal and one block.

Leading Long Beach State in scoring was junior Savannah Tucker who finished the game with 17 points to go along with eight rebounds, and one assist. Rounding out the Beach's double-digit scorers were Lovely Sonnier and Sydney Woodley who tallied 14 points each.

The game began close as the two teams traded points early. The Beach and the Trojans found themselves deadlocked at 11-11 at the media timeout (4:37). However, USC would go on to score seven-straight points to open up a 19-14 advantage by 2:16, before closing the opening frame up 22-16.

The Trojans opened the second quarter on an 8-0 run as USC jumped out in front of the Beach, 27-16 by 8:56. Back-to-back layups from Crawshaw cut the Trojans' lead down to seven (33-26) by 2:59. However, USC extended their lead back up to nine (40-31) by halftime.

Long Beach State turned in its best performance of the game in the third quarter. The Beach made 9-of-11 field goals as they outshot USC 81.8 percent to 29.4 percent from the field on their way to winning the frame, 21-19. Sonnier was hot for LBSU as she connected on 4-of-4 field goals and led the team with eight points. The Beach scored six-consecutive points, highlighted by a steal run back for a layup by Woodley, to whittle the Trojans' lead down to five (48-43) as USC called a timeout at 4:41. By the end of the frame, USC held a seven-point edge (59-52) over the Beach.

The fourth quarter saw USC take its largest lead of the game, 71-57, at 6:26 after going on a 7-0 run. Despite being down by 14, Long Beach State did not fold. The Beach continued to battle one of the nation's top teams and chipped the lead down to four (75-71 at 2:20) after a driving layup from Woodley. That would be the closest Long Beach would come as USC finished the game with an eight-point lead, 85-77.

This season, USC was averaging 54.4 points allowed on a 39.4 field goal percentage. The Trojans owned a scoring margin of +26.7, winning most of their games in blow-out fashion. When playing other Big West teams this season, USC was outscoring the conference 87.7 points per game to 46.0 points per game for a scoring margin of 41.7. Long Beach State came into the game and scored 22.6 more points than what USC was averaging, while shooting 42.2 percent from the field. The Beach outscored their Big West opponents' offensive output by 31.0 points.

A big part of USC's success on the night was McKenzie Forbes as she led all scorers with 36 points, while adding seven boards, four assists, and two steals. Kayla Padilla and Taylor Bigby also finished with double-figures recording 16 and 11 points, respectively.

Long Beach State will be back in action on Thursday, Dec. 28 to open Big West action against Cal State Fullerton. The game is set to tip-off at 7 p.m. at the Walter Pyramid. The game will be broadcast live on ESPN+.
