Four LBSU players score in double figures as Abby Shoff leads the way with a career-high 18 points
LONG BEACH, Calif. – Long Beach Women's Basketball got off to a slow start but made up for it by shooting 57.5 percent from the field in the second half to break open the game and defeat Nevada, 79-57, on Sunday afternoon at the Walter Pyramid.
The Beach (2-0) finished the game shooting a solid 48.2 percent from the field, while holding the Wolfpack (1-1) to 25.3 percent. LBSU also outrebounded Nevada (49-41) and held the edge over the guests in assists 12-6, points in the paint (44-32), and point off the bench (38-29).
Sophomore Abby Shoff came off the bench and went off. She finished the day with a career-high 18 points, while adding nine rebounds, and two assists. Shoff was efficient from the floor as she connected on 8-of-10 field goals.
Shoff led a quartet of double figure scorers from the Beach as Savannah Tucker poured in 14 points, while Cheyenne Givens and Sydney Woodley each scored 13. Long Beach State spread the ball around making it difficult for Nevada to guard four hot shooters.
In addition to her 13-point performance, Woodley contributed six boards, three steals, and one assist in the competitive matchup.
Nevada jumped out in front taking an early 4-0 lead. The Wolfpack would lead by as many as six (8-2) in the first quarter, before the Beach chipped away. Long Beach State closed the gap and trailed by just two (16-14) at the end of the quarter.
Long Beach State took its first lead of the game in the second quarter as Shoff hit a jumper at 6:55, followed by a three at 6:29 to ignite the Beach (22-21). The Beach picked up the pace in the second quarter and shot 45.5 percent from the field, a vast improvement from their 25.0 field goal percentage in the first quarter. With the offense clicking, LBSU took a 30-29 edge into the locker room at halftime.
The Beach came out of halftime and continued to heat up. Long Beach shot 56.3 percent from the field in the third quarter and used a 9-0 run, sparked by a Shoff layup at 2:58 to break the game open. LBSU led by nine (51-42) with 2:01 remaining in the frame, and held a 53-48 advantage heading in to the fourth quarter.
By the fourth quarter, Long Beach State had found its groove and dominated the Wolfpack, outscoring Nevada 26-9 in the frame. The Beach out-shot the Pack 58.5 percent to 15.8 percent in the fourth quarter, limiting Nevada to just three made field goals and never allowing them to connect behind the arc. Meanwhile, Long Beach State made 10 field goals on 17 attempts and went on a 7-0 run to jump out in front 64-51. The Beach surged ahead and cruised to a 79-57 victory.
Nevada was led by Audrey Roden who finished the game with 17 points and five steals. Victoria Davis added 11 points, while also collecting five steals. Kennedy Lee cleaned up the glass as she grabbed 12 rebounds to go along with eight points, two assists, two steals, and one block.
Long Beach State will hit the road for a four-game road swing beginning Wednesday, Nov. 15 at California Baptist in Riverside, Calif. Tip-off is set for 6 p.m.
