Cheyenne Givens comes off the bench and leads the Beach with 17 points, while Patricia Chung adds 15 in the setback

RIVERSIDE, Calif. – Long Beach State played its first road contest of the season and came up short at California Baptist, falling 82-71 on Wednesday night at Fowler Events Center.

The Beach (2-1) were led by Cheyenne Givens and Patricia Chung, while the Lancers' (3-0) Chloe Webb led the way with a double-double.

Givens was Long Beach's leading scorer with 17 points, just one off her career-high, while Chung finished the game with 15 points to tie her previous career-best.

Sydney Woodley turned in a solid showing with eight points, seven rebounds, and four steals, while Casey Valenti Paea dished out six assists, while adding four steals.

Long Beach State started the game with a three from Lovely Sonnier to give the Beach a quick lead over the Lancers. LBSU held a three-point lead over CBU several times early on as Abby Shoff's driving layup gave the Beach a 13-10 edge with 3:08 on the clock. The Lancers got a three from Webb to tie the game (13-all) at 2:54, before holding a two-point (17-15) edge over Long Beach at the end of the first quarter.

The Beach fell behind by six (21-15) to start the second quarter after going nearly three-minutes without a field goal. LBSU stayed close, cutting the Lancers' lead down to two (23-21) at 6:36, but that was as close as the Beach would get. California Baptist used a 7-0 run to open up a nine-point lead (30-21) at 5:29 and never looked back. The Lancers led by as many as 15 (40-25) in the quarter and held a 40-30 advantage at halftime.

The third quarter saw the Beach trail by as many as 20 (54-34) at 5:39. However, Long Beach State continued to play its game and managed to cut California Baptist's lead down to 14 (63-49) after a three-pointer from Chung to end the quarter.

Despite falling behind by 20 (69-49) again early in the fourth quarter, the Beach furiously chipped away and whittled the Lancers' lead down to 10 twice. Down 79-68 with less than a minute remaining, Long Beach State got a triple from Givens to pull within eight (79-71). However, Long Beach's rally was cut short as the Beach came up on the wrong end of an 82-71 decision.

Webb concluded the game with 29 points, 11 rebounds, two assists, and two steals. Meanwhile, Nae Nae Calhoun distributed seven assists and as many points. Grace Schmidt and Nhug Bosch Duran each tallied double-figures with Schmidt posting 15 points and Bosch Duran adding 13. Schmidt also added eight boards for the Lancers.

Long Beach State continues its road swing with a Tuesday, Nov. 21 contest at Fresno State at 6 p.m.
